Mu'awiya bin Hakam As-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Once we were praying with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and one of the worshippers sneezed. I said, "May Allah have mercy on you." The people glared at me. I was startled and said, "What is wrong? Why are you staring at me?" They started slapping their thighs. When I saw that they wanted to silence me, I remained quiet. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "May my parents be sacrificed for him who is not like others (in anger). I have neither seen anyone better than him in teaching nor anyone better than him in learning." When he (the Prophet) finished the prayer, by Allah, he neither rebuked me nor cursed me nor beat me, but he said, "Talking (worldly talk) is not befitting in prayer. Prayer is only for glorifying, exalting and reciting the Qur'an," or as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said.

حضرت معاویہ بن حکم سلمی رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ہم لوگ نبی کریم ﷺ کے ساتھ نماز پڑھ رہے تھے کہ نمازیوں میں سے ایک آدمی کو چھینک آئی میں نے اسے "" یرحمک اللہ "" کہہ کر جواب دیا تو لوگ مجھے اپنی آنکھوں سے گھورنے لگے میں نے سٹپٹا کر کہا کیا مصیبت ہے؟ تم لوگ مجھے کیوں دیکھ رہے ہو؟ وہ اپنے ہاتھ اپنی رانوں پر مارنے لگے جب میں نے دیکھا کہ وہ مجھے خاموش کرانا چاہتے ہیں تو میں خاموش ہوگیا، نبی کریم ﷺ "" میرے ماں باپ ان پر قربان ہوں "" میں نے ان جیسا معلم پہلے دیکھا اور نہ ان سے بہتر تعلیم دینے والا ان کے بعد دیکھا "" جب نماز سے فارغ ہوئے تو اللہ کی قسم انہوں نے مجھے ڈانٹا نہ ہی گالی دی اور نہ مارا پیٹا بلکہ فرمایا کہ اس نماز میں انسانوں کا کلام مناسب نہیں ہوتا نماز تو نام ہے تسبیح و تکبیر اور تلاوت قرآن کا، یا جیسے نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا۔
Hazrat Muawiya bin Hakam Salmi Radi Allaho Anho se marvi hai ki aik martaba hum log Nabi Kareem Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ke sath namaz parh rahe the ki namazion mein se aik aadmi ko chheenk aayi mein ne use "Yarhamukallah" keh kar jawab diya to log mujhe apni aankhon se ghoorne lage mein ne satpata kar kaha kya musibat hai? tum log mujhe kyun dekh rahe ho? woh apne hath apni ranon par marne lage jab mein ne dekha ki woh mujhe khamosh karna chahte hain to mein khamosh hogaya, Nabi Kareem Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam "mere maan baap un per qurban hon" mein ne un jaisa mu'allim pehle dekha aur na un se behtar taleem dene wala un ke baad dekha" jab namaz se farigh hue to Allah ki qasam unhon ne mujhe daanta na hi gaali di aur na mara peeta balkeh farmaya ki is namaz mein insano ka kalam munasib nahin hota namaz to naam hai tasbeeh-o-takbeer aur tilawat quran ka, ya jaise Nabi Kareem Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne farmaya.
Narrated Mu'awiya bin Hakam (RA): I said: Messenger of Allah, tell me about the actions we did in the pre-Islamic period – for example, we used to take omens from birds. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “That was just your imagination, it should not prevent you from doing anything.” I said: Messenger of Allah, we used to go to soothsayers. He (peace be upon him) said: “Do not do that.”

حضرت معاویہ بن حکم رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ میں نے نبی کریم ﷺ سے پوچھا یا رسول اللہ! یہ بتائیے کہ ہم زمانہ جاہلیت میں جو کام کرتے تھے مثلاً ہم پرندوں سے شگون لیتے تھے (اس کا کیا حکم ہے؟) نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا یہ تمہارے ذہن کا ایک وہم ہوتا تھا اب یہ تمہیں کسی کام سے نہ روکے میں نے پوچھا یا رسول اللہ! ہم کاہنوں کے پاس بھی جایا کرتے تھے؟ نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا اب نہ جایا کرو۔
Hazrat Muawiya bin Hakam Raziallahu Anhu se marvi hai keh maine Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se poocha ya Rasulullah! Yeh bataiye keh hum zamanah jahiliyat mein jo kaam karte thay maslan hum parindon se shagun lete thay (iss ka kya hukm hai?) Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya yeh tumhare zehn ka aik waham hota tha ab yeh tumhein kisi kaam se na roke maine poocha ya Rasulullah! Hum kahinon ke paas bhi jaya karte thay? Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya ab na jaya karo.
It is narrated on the authority of Muawiya bin Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, what is the ruling about the things we used to do in the days of ignorance, for example, we used to take omens from birds?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "It was just a delusion of your mind. Now it should not stop you from doing anything." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! We used to go to the soothsayers too?". The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Do not go to them now.".

Mu'awiya bin Hakam As-Salami (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were praying with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man among the worshippers sneezed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "May my parents be sacrificed for him, I have never seen anyone who was a better teacher than him, neither before nor after." When the prayer was finished, by Allah, he neither rebuked me nor cursed me, nor did he beat me. He said, "Speaking (worldly talk) is not befitting in prayer. Prayer is for glorifying Allah (Tasbih), declaring His greatness (Takbir), and reciting the Quran", or as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said.

The previous Hadith is also narrated from Muawiyah bin Hakam Salmi (may Allah be pleased with him) through another chain of narration. However, in this narration it states that prayer is the name for glorification, exaltation, and recitation of the Quran, or as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said.

حضرت معاویہ بن حکم سلمی رضی اللہ عنہ سے گذشتہ حدیث اس دوسری سند سے بھی مروی ہے۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔ البتہ اس میں یوں ہے کہ نماز تو نام ہے تسبیح و تکبیر اور تلاوت قرآن کا، یا جیسے نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا۔
Hazrat Muawiya bin Hakam Salmi (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se guzishta hadees is doosri sanad se bhi marvi hai. Albata is mein yun hai ki namaz to naam hai tasbeeh o takbeer aur tilawat Quran ka, ya jaise Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya.
Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I had a slave girl who used to graze my goats near Uhud and Juwaniya. One day, I went to her and saw that a wolf had taken a goat from her flock and run away. I am also a human being, and I feel sorry like ordinary people. So, I got angry and slapped her. Then I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and this matter weighed heavily on him because of me. Seeing this, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not free her?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Bring her to me." I brought her to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked her, "Where is Allah?" She said, "In the sky." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "Who am I?" She said, "You are the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Free her, for she is a believer."

حضرت معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میری ایک باندی تھی جو احد اور جوانیہ کے قرب میری بکریاں چرایا کرتی تھی ایک دن میں اس کے پاس گیا تو دیکھا کہ ایک بھیڑیا اس کے ریوڑ میں سے ایک بکری لے کر بھاگ گیا ہے میں بھی ایک انسان ہوں اور مجھے بھی عام لوگوں کی طرح افسوس ہوتا ہے چناچہ میں نے غصے میں آکر اسے ایک طمانچہ رسید کردیا پھر نبی کریم ﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا تو نبی کریم ﷺ پر میرے حوالے سے یہ بات بہت بوجھ بنی یہ دیکھ کر میں نے عرض کیا یا رسول اللہ! کیا میں اسے آزاد نہ کر دوں؟ نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا اسے میرے پاس لے کر آؤ میں اسے لے کر آیا تو نبی کریم ﷺ نے اس سے پوچھا کہ اللہ کہاں ہے؟ اس نے کہا آسمان میں نبی کریم ﷺ نے پوچھا میں کون ہوں؟ اس نے کہا کہ آپ اللہ کے رسول ہیں نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا اسے آزاد کردو کیونکہ یہ مؤمنہ ہے۔
Hazrat Muawiya (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke meri ek bandi thi jo Uhud aur Jawaniye ke qurb meri bakriyan charaya karti thi ek din main is ke pas gaya to dekha ke ek bheriya is ke rewar mein se ek bakri le kar bhag gaya hai main bhi ek insan hun aur mujhe bhi aam logon ki tarah afsos hota hai chunancha main ne ghusse mein aakar ise ek tamancha raseed kar diya phir Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein hazir hua to Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) par mere hawale se yeh baat bahut boojh bani yeh dekh kar main ne arz kiya ya Rasulullah kya main ise aazaad na kar dun Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya ise mere pas le kar aao main ise le kar aaya to Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne is se pucha ke Allah kahan hai is ne kaha aasman mein Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne pucha main kaun hun is ne kaha ke aap Allah ke Rasul hain Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya ise aazaad kar do kyunki yeh momina hai.
It was narrated from Mu'awiya bin Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about something we used to do during the Jaahiliyyah (days of ignorance). We used to seek omens from birds." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "That was just an idea that crossed your minds; it should not stop you from doing anything." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to go to the soothsayers." He said: "Do not do that."

Narrated Mu'awiya bin Hakam (RA): I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about what we used to do during the pre-Islamic period, like taking omens from birds. What is the ruling about that?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It was just a thought that crossed your mind. It should not prevent you from anything now." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, we used to go to soothsayers too." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do not go to them now."
