The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2382
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Salat al-Khawf (prayer of fear) used to be performed in the same way as your watchmen pray behind your Imams nowadays. However, the difference was that the army used to be in valleys. One group of people would stand up, all of them with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When one group finished praying the first Rak'ah with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) by performing the prostration, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stand up, and the group that was standing would then perform their prostration. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up, everyone would stand up. Then, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would bow, and everyone would bow with him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prostrated, the group that had initially stood up would join him in prostration, while the group that had prostrated with him the first time would stand up. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat down, along with those who had performed the last prostration with him, the group that was standing would then perform their prostration. Then, they would sit down, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would complete the prayer with the Taslim (salutation of peace), joining everyone together.

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ صلوۃ الخوف اسی طرح ہوتی تھی جیسے آج کل تمہارے چوکیدار تمہارے ائمہ کے پیچھے نماز پڑھتے ہیں، البتہ ہوتا یہ تھا کہ فوج گھاٹیوں میں ہوتی تھی، لوگوں کا ایک گروہ کھڑا ہو جاتا، ہوتے وہ سب ہی نبی ﷺ کے ساتھ تھے، ایک گروہ نبی ﷺ کے ساتھ جب سجدہ کر چکتا تو نبی ﷺ کھڑے ہو جاتے اور جو گروہ کھڑا ہوتا وہ خود سجدہ کر لیتا، پھر جب نبی ﷺ کھڑے ہوتے تو سب ہی کھڑے ہو جاتے، پھر نبی ﷺ رکوع کرتے، تمام لوگ بھی رکوع کرتے، نبی ﷺ سجدہ کرتے تو نبی ﷺ کے ساتھ سجدہ میں وہ لوگ شریک ہو جاتے جو پہلی مرتبہ کھڑے ہوئے تھے اور پہلی مرتبہ نبی ﷺ کے ساتھ سجدہ کرنے والے کھڑے ہو جاتے، جب نبی ﷺ بیٹھ جاتے اور وہ لوگ بھی جنہوں نے آپ ﷺ کے ساتھ آخر میں سجدہ کیا ہوتا، تو وہ لوگ سجدہ کر لیتے جو کھڑے تھے، پھر وہ بیٹھ جاتے اور نبی ﷺ ان سب کو اکٹھا لے کر سلام پھیرتے تھے۔
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Salatul Khauf isi tarah hoti thi jaise aaj kal tumhare chowkidar tumhare aima ke peeche namaz parhte hain, albatta hota yeh tha ki fauj ghatiyon mein hoti thi, logon ka ek group khara ho jata, hote wo sab hi Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sath the, ek group Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sath jab Sajdah kar chuka to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) kharay ho jate aur jo group khara hota wo khud Sajdah kar leta, phir jab Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) kharay hote to sab hi kharay ho jate, phir Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ruku karte, tamam log bhi ruku karte, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Sajdah karte to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sath Sajdah mein wo log shareek ho jate jo pehli martaba kharay huye the aur pehli martaba Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sath Sajdah karne wale kharay ho jate, jab Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) baith jate aur wo log bhi jinhon ne Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sath akhir mein Sajdah kiya hota, to wo log Sajdah kar lete jo kharay the, phir wo baith jate aur Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) in sab ko ektha le kar salaam pherte the.
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي دَاوُدُ بْنُ الْحُصَيْنِ مَوْلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ:" مَا كَانَتْ صَلَاةُ الْخَوْفِ إِلَّا كَصَلَاةِ أَحْرَاسِكُمْ , هؤلاء الْيَوْمَ خَلْفَ أَئِمَّتِكُمْ، إِلَّا أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ عُقْبًا، قَامَتْ طَائِفَةٌ وَهُمْ جَمْعٌ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَسَجَدَتْ مَعَهُ طَائِفَةٌ، ثُمَّ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَسَجَدَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا قِيَامًا لِأَنْفُسِهِمْ، ثُمَّ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم، وَقَامُوا مَعَهُ جَمِيعًا، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ وَرَكَعُوا مَعَهُ جَمِيعًا، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ، فَسَجَدَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا مَعَهُ قِيَامًا أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ، وَقَامَ الْآخَرُونَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا سَجَدُوا مَعَهُ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ، فَلَمَّا جَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِينَ سَجَدُوا مَعَهُ فِي آخِرِ صَلَاتِهِمْ، سَجَدَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا قِيَامًا لِأَنْفُسِهِمْ، ثُمَّ جَلَسُوا، فَجَمَعَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالسَّلَامِ".
