Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 5759
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that once a villager asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the night prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured with his two fingers and said: “Pray two rak'ahs and one rak'ah in the latter part of the night for Witr.”

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ایک دیہاتی شخص نے نبی ﷺ سے رات کی نماز سے متعلق پوچھا تو نبی ﷺ نے اپنی دو انگلیوں سے اشارہ کر کے فرمایا:”دو رکعتیں پڑھا کرو اور وتر کی رات کے آخری حصے میں ایک رکعت ہے۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki ek martaba ek dehati shakhs ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se raat ki namaz se mutalliq poocha to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne apni do ungliyon se ishara kar ke farmaya:"Do rakaten parha karo aur witr ki raat ke aakhiri hisse mein ek rakat hai."
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ , أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ , سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ:" مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، وَالْوَتْرُ رَكْعَةٌ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ".
