Chapter on the Middle Prayer and the Opinion of Those Who Say It Is Dhuhr
باب صلاة الوسطى وقول من قال: هي الظهر
Sunan al-Kubra Bayhaqi 2154
(2154) (a) Narrated Zaid bin Thabit (RA) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pray (the Zuhr prayer) at midday. It was very difficult for his Companions (RA). Then this verse was revealed: {حٰفِظُوْا عَلَی الصَّلَوٰتِ وَ الصَّلٰوۃِ الْوُسْطٰی وَ قُوْمُوْا لِلّٰہِ قٰنِتِیْنَ} (Al-Baqarah: 238) Guard strictly (five obligatory) prayers especially the middle prayer and stand before Allah in obedience. (Zaid bin Thabit) said: That is the middle prayer because there are two prayers before it and two after it.
(b) In another narration, the wording is: Yusli al-Zuhr bil-Hajirah (He used to pray Zuhr at midday).

(٢١٥٤) (ا) زید بن ثابت (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) (ظہر کی نماز) دوپہر کے وقت ادا فرماتے تھے۔ یہ آپ کے صحابہ (رض) پر بہت گراں گذرتی تھی۔ پھر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی : { حٰفِظُوْا عَلَی الصَّلَوٰتِ وَ الصَّلٰوۃِ الْوُسْطٰی وَ قُوْمُوْا لِلّٰہِ قٰنِتِیْنَ } (البقرۃ : ٢٣٨) نمازوں کی محافظت کرو خصوصاً درمیانی نماز کی اور اللہ کے لیے فرمان بردار ہو کر کھڑے ہوجاؤ ۔ (زید بن ثابت) فرماتے ہیں : کہ یہی درمیانی نماز ہے کیونکہ اس سے پہلے بھی دو نمازیں ہیں اور اس کے بعد بھی۔
(ب) ایک دوسری روایت میں یصلی الظہر بالہاجرۃ کے الفاظ ہیں کہ دوپہر کو ظہر کی نماز ادا کرتے تھے۔
(2154) (a) Zaid bin Sabit (RA) se riwayat hai ki Nabi (SAW) (Zuhar ki namaz) dopahar ke waqt ada farmate thay. Yeh aap ke sahaba (RA) par bohat gran guzarti thi. Phir yeh ayat nazil hui: { Hafizu alissalawati wassalátil wustaa wa qoomoo lillahi qaniteen} (Al Baqarah: 238) Namazon ki hifazat karo khusoosan darmiyani namaz ki aur Allah ke liye farman bardar ho kar kharay hojao. (Zaid bin Sabit) farmate hain: Ki yahi darmiyani namaz hai kyunki is se pehle bhi do namazain hain aur is ke baad bhi.
(b) Aik dusri riwayat mein Yusalli al Zuhar bil Hajirah ke alfaz hain ki dopahar ko Zuhar ki namaz ada karte thay.
(2155) (a) It is narrated on the authority of Zahra that we were sitting with Zaid bin Thabit. He sent some people to Usama bin Zaid. They asked you (the Prophet) about the middle prayer, so you said: “It is Zuhr (the noon prayer). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pray it at midday (in the heat).
(b) In a narration transmitted from another chain, it is added, “Fa qala ya’ni Zaidan: Hiya ‘l-zuhr,” meaning Zaid said: It is the Zuhr prayer, and they conveyed this message to Usama.

(٢١٥٥) (ا) زہرہ سے روایت ہے کہ ہم زید بن ثابت کے پاس بیٹھے تھے۔ انھوں نے چند لوگوں کو اسامہ بن زید کی خدمت میں بھیجا، انھوں نے آپ (رض) سے درمیانی نماز کے بارے پوچھا تو آپ نے فرمایا : وہ ظہر ہے، رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اس کو دوپہر کے وقت (گرمی میں) پڑھتے تھے۔
(ب) ایک دوسری سند سے منقول روایت میں یہ اضافہ ہے ” فقال یعنی زیدا : ہی الظہر “ یعنی زید نے فرمایا : وہ ظہر کی نماز ہے اور انھوں نے اسامہ کی طرف یہ پیغام بھیجا۔
2155 a Zehra se riwayat hai ki hum Zaid bin Sabit ke paas baithe the unhon ne chand logon ko Usama bin Zaid ki khidmat mein bheja unhon ne aap se darmiyani namaz ke bare pucha to aap ne farmaya woh zuhar hai Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) isko dophar ke waqt garmi mein parhte the
b Ek dusri sanad se manqol riwayat mein ye izafa hai faqaal yani Zaida hi alzuhar yani Zaid ne farmaya woh zuhar ki namaz hai aur unhon ne Usama ki taraf ye paigham bheja
Saeed bin Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I, Urwah bin Zubair and Ibrahim bin Talha were sitting together. I said that Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that the middle prayer refers to the Zuhr prayer. Then he said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by us, so Urwah said: Send people to Ibn Umar so that they can ask him about it. So we sent a boy to you, so he asked you and came back and said: It is the Zuhr prayer. We did not believe the boy's words, so we all got up and went to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him, and he said: It is the Zuhr prayer.

(٢١٥٦) سعید بن مسیب (رح) فرماتے ہیں کہ میں، عروہ بن زبیر اور ابراہیم بن طلحہ بیٹھے ہوئے تھے۔ میں نے کہا کہ حضرت ابوسعید خدری (رض) فرماتے تھے کہ درمیانی نماز سے مراد ظہر کی نماز ہے۔ پھر فرماتے ہیں کہ ہمارے پاس سے ابن عمر (رض) گذرے تو عروہ نے کہا : ابن عمر کے پاس لوگوں کو بھیجو تاکہ وہ ان سے اس بارے میں پوچھیں۔ چنانچہ ہم نے ایک بچہ آپ کی خدمت میں بھیجا تو اس نے آپ سے پوچھا اور واپس آ کر کہا : وہ ظہر کی نماز (ہی) ہے۔ ہمیں بچے کی بات پر یقین نہ آیا تو ہم سب اٹھ کر ابن عمر (رض) کے پاس چلے گئے اور ان سے پوچھا تو انھوں نے فرمایا : وہ ظہر کی نماز ہے۔
(2156) Saeed bin Musayyab (rah) farmate hain ki main, Urwah bin Zubair aur Ibrahim bin Talha baithe hue thay. Maine kaha ki Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (ra) farmate thay ki darmiyani namaz se muraad zuhar ki namaz hai. Phir farmate hain ki hamare paas se Ibn Umar (ra) guzare to Urwah ne kaha: Ibn Umar ke paas logon ko bhejo takay woh unse is baare mein poochain. Chunancha hum ne ek bachcha aap ki khidmat mein bheja to usne aap se poocha aur wapas aa kar kaha: Woh zuhar ki namaz (hi) hai. Hamein bachche ki baat par yaqeen na aaya to hum sab uth kar Ibn Umar (ra) ke paas chale gaye aur unse poocha to unhon ne farmaya: Woh zuhar ki namaz hai.
