Chapter on How to Place Hands on Thighs and Indicate with the Tasbih

Sunan al-Kubra Bayhaqi 2779
Ali bin Abdul Rahman Muawi narrates that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw me playing with pebbles during prayer. When he finished the prayer, he forbade me from doing so and said, "Do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to do." I asked, "How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to do it?" He said, "When you sit in prayer, you should place your right palm on your right thigh, close all your fingers, point with your index finger, and place your left palm on your left thigh.”

(٢٧٧٩) علی بن عبدالرحمن معاوی فرماتے ہیں کہ عبداللہ بن عمر (رض) نے مجھے نماز میں کنکریوں سے کھیلتے ہوئے دیکھا، جب وہ نماز سے فارغ ہوئے تو مجھے منع کیا اور فرمایا : ایسے کرو جیسے رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کیا کرتے تھے۔ میں نے پوچھا : رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کیسے کیا کرتے تھے ؟ انھوں نے فرمایا : آپ جب نماز میں بیٹھتے تو داہنی ہتھیلی کو دائیں ران پر رکھتے اور تمام انگلیوں کو بند کرلیتے اور شہادت والی انگلی سے اشارہ کرتے اور بائیں ہتھیلی بائیں ران پر رکھتے۔
2779 Ali bin Abdurrahman Muawi farmate hain ki Abdullah bin Umar (rz) ne mujhe namaz mein kankaryon se khelte huye dekha, jab wo namaz se farigh huye to mujhe mana kiya aur farmaya: aise karo jaise Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) kiya karte the. Maine pucha: Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) kaise kiya karte the? Unhon ne farmaya: Aap jab namaz mein baithte to dahni hatheli ko dayen ran par rakhte aur tamam ungliyon ko band karlete aur shahadat wali ungli se ishara karte aur baen hatheli baen ran par rakhte.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat in prayer, he would place his palms on his thighs, raise the index finger of his right hand, and supplicate with it, while keeping his left hand spread open on his left thigh.

(٢٧٨٠) ابن عمر (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) جب نماز میں بیٹھتے تو اپنی ہتھیلیوں کو اپنی رانوں پر رکھتے اور اپنے دائیں ہاتھ کی شہادت والی انگلی کو اٹھاتے تو اس کے ساتھ دعا کرتے اور بائیں ہاتھ کو بائیں ران پر کھلا رکھتے۔
(2780) Ibn Umar (RA) farmate hain ki Rasool Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) jab namaz mein baithte to apni hatheliyon ko apni raanon par rakhte aur apne daayen hath ki shahadat wali ungli ko uthate to uske sath dua karte aur baayen hath ko baayen ran par khula rakhte.
(2781) (a) It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would sit for the tashahhud, he would place his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh and he would make a ring with his index finger and thumb and supplicate.
(b) Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) has narrated this hadith with his chain of narrators in his Sahih, but in his narration, the words are that he (the Prophet) made a ring (with his index finger and thumb) and pointed with his index finger.

(٢٧٨١) (ا) ابن عمر (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) جب تشہد کے لیے بیٹھتے تو اپنی دائیں ہتھیلی کو داہنی ران پر اور بائیں ہتھیلی کو بائیں ران پر رکھتے اور ترپن کی گرہ لگا کر دعا کرتے۔
(ب) امام مسلم (رح) نے اپنی صحیح میں اپنی سند سے یہ روایت نقل کی ہے مگر اس میں یہ الفاظ ہیں کہ آپ نے ترپن (٥٣) کی گرہ لگائی اور شہادت والی انگلی کے ساتھ اشارہ فرمایا۔
(2781) (a) Ibn Umar (RA) se riwayat hai keh Rasul Allah (SAW) jab tashahhud ke liye baithte to apni dayen hatheli ko dayen ran par aur baen hatheli ko baen ran par rakhte aur tarpan ki girah laga kar dua karte.
(b) Imam Muslim (RH) ne apni sahih mein apni sanad se yeh riwayat naqal ki hai magar is mein yeh alfaz hain keh aap ne tarpan (53) ki girah lagai aur shahadat wali ungli ke sath ishara farmaya.
(2782) (a) Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubair narrated from his father that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would sit in prayer, he would place his left foot between his thigh and calf and spread out his right foot. And he would place his left hand on his left knee and his right hand on his right knee, and he would point with his index finger.
(b) The aforementioned wording is from the hadith of Abu Abdullah, and the wording of Ibn Abdan's hadith is that he placed his right hand on his right knee and pointed with one finger.

(٢٧٨٢) (ا) عامر بن عبداللہ بن زبیر اپنے والد سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) جب نماز میں بیٹھتے تو اپنے بائیں پاؤں کو اپنی ران اور پنڈلی کے درمیان رکھتے اور داہنے پاؤں کو بچھا لیتے اور بائیں ہاتھ کو بائیں گھٹنے پر رکھتے اور دائیں ہاتھ کو داہنے گھٹنے پر رکھتے اور اپنی شہادت والی انگلی کے ساتھ اشارہ فرماتے۔
(ب) مذکورہ الفاظ ابوعبداللہ کی حدیث کے ہیں اور ابن عبدان کی حدیث کے الفاظ یہ ہیں کہ آپ نے اپنا دایاں ہاتھ داہنے گھٹنے پر رکھا اور ایک انگلی کے ساتھ اشارہ فرمایا۔
(2782) (a) Aamir bin Abdullah bin Zubair apne walid se riwayat karte hain ki Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) jab namaz mein baithte to apne baen paon ko apni ran aur pindli ke darmiyan rakhte aur dahne paon ko bichha lete aur baen hath ko baen ghutne par rakhte aur dahne hath ko dahne ghutne par rakhte aur apni shahadat wali ungli ke sath ishara farmate.
(b) Mazkura alfaz Abu Abdullah ki hadees ke hain aur Ibn e Abdan ki hadees ke alfaz ye hain ki aap ne apna dayan hath dahne ghutne par rakha aur ek ungli ke sath ishara farmaya.
(2783) (a) Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubair narrated from his father that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would sit in the Qadah (sitting position in prayer), he would supplicate and place his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh, pointing with his index finger and placing his thumb on his middle finger, and placing his left palm gently on his knee.
(b) In the narration of Laith bin Sa'd, it is reported that when you (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would sit in prayer, you would place your right hand on your knee, pointing with your index finger.
(c) It is narrated from Abu Saalih that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) pointing with two fingers in prayer, so he said: "Point with one finger."
(d) A narration received through another chain of narration is also mentioned in the Chapter of Supplication.

(٢٧٨٣) (ا) عامر بن عبداللہ بن زبیر اپنے والد سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) جب قعدہ میں ہوتے تو دعا کرتے اور اپنا داہنا ہاتھ اپنی دائیں ران پر اور بایاں ہاتھ اپنی بائیں ران پر اور انگشت شہادت سے اشارہ کرتے اور انگوٹھے کو اپنی درمیان والی انگلی پر رکھتے اور بائیں ہتھیلی کو اپنے گھٹنے پر آہستہ سے رکھ دیتے۔
(ب) لیث بن سعد کی روایت میں ہے کہ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) جب نماز میں بیٹھتے تو داہنے ہاتھ کو اپنے گھٹنے پر رکھ کر اپنی شہادت والی انگلی کے ساتھ اشارہ کرتے۔
(ج) ابو صالح سے منقول ہے کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے سعد (رض) کو نماز میں اپنی دو انگلیوں سے اشارہ کرتے دیکھا تو فرمایا : ایک انگلی سے اشارہ کر۔
(د) ایک دوسری سند سے موصول روایت باب الدعا میں بھی مذکور ہے۔
(2783) (a) Aamir bin Abdullah bin Zubair apne wald se riwayat karte hain ki Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) jab qadah mein hote to dua karte aur apna dahina hath apni dayen ran par aur bayan hath apni bayen ran par aur ungli shahadat se ishara karte aur ungoothe ko apni darmiyan wali ungli par rakhte aur bayen hatheli ko apne ghutne par aahista se rakh dete.
(b) Lais bin Saad ki riwayat mein hai ki aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) jab namaz mein baithte to dahne hath ko apne ghutne par rakh kar apni shahadat wali ungli ke sath ishara karte.
(c) Abu Saleh se manqol hai ki Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne Saad (RA) ko namaz mein apni do ungliyon se ishara karte dekha to farmaya : Ek ungli se ishara karo.
(d) Ek dusri sanad se mosul riwayat bab ul dua mein bhi mazkoor hai.
