Chapter: Those Who Prayed Two Rak'ahs During an Eclipse

(6331) It is narrated from Hasan Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a solar eclipse occurred during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he (the Prophet) prayed two rak'ahs.

(٦٣٣١) حسن ابوبکرہ (رض) سے نقل فرماتے ہیں کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے دور میں سورج گرہن لگا تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی۔

(6332) (a) Narrated Hasan Abu Bakr (RA): When there was a solar eclipse, we were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) went out, pulling his cloak, until he reached the mosque. The people hurried too. So he (ﷺ) led us in a two-rak'ah prayer. When the eclipse was over, he (ﷺ) said, "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. Allah frightens His slaves with them. They are not eclipsed because of someone's death or life. When you see an eclipse of the sun or the moon, pray." The Prophet (ﷺ) said this when the people said it happened because of the death of his son Ibrahim.
(b) In another narration, it is reported from Abu Ma'mar that he did not mention the words: "Allah frightens His slaves with them (the sun and the moon)."
(c) He (ﷺ) led us in a two-rak'ah prayer when his son Ibrahim passed away. This means that he (ﷺ) performed two bowings in each rak'ah, as established from Jabir (RA), Abdullah bin Umar (RA), and Aisha (RA). However, Yazid bin Zurai, and others from Yunus bin Ubaid, narrated regarding the hadith that he (ﷺ) prayed two rak'ahs like you pray.

(٦٣٣٢) (الف) حضرت حسن ابوبکرہ (رض) سے نقل فرماتے ہیں کہ جب سورج گرہن لگا توہم رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے پاس تھے۔ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اپنی چادر کو کھینچتے ہوئے نکلے ، یہاں تک کہ مسجد پہنچ گئے۔ لوگوں نے بھی جلدی کی تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہمیں دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی۔ جب گرہن ختم ہوا تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : سورج اور چاند اللہ کی نشانیوں میں سے دو نشانیاں ہیں۔ اللہ ان کے ذریعے اپنے بندوں کو ڈراتے ہیں۔ یہ کسی کی موت و زندگی کی وجہ سے بےنور نہیں ہوتے۔ جب تم سورج یا چاند کو دیکھو کہ انھیں گرہن لگا ہوا ہے تو نماز پڑھو۔ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے یہ بات اس وقت کہی جب لوگوں نے کہا کہ ایسا آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے بیٹے ابراہیم کی وجہ سے ہوا ہے۔
(ب) ایک دوسری روایت میں ابو معمر سے منقول ہے انھوں نے یُخَوِّفُ اللَّہُ بِہِمَا عِبَادَہُ کے الفاظ ذکر نہیں کیے۔
(ج) آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہمیں دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی، جب آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے بیٹے ابراہیم فوت ہوئے۔ اس سے مراد یہ ہے کہ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہر رکعت میں دو رکوع کیے، جیسا کہ جابر (رض) ‘ عبداللہ بن عمر (رض) اور حضرت عائشہ (رض) سے ثابت ہے، لیکن یزید بنزریع وغیرہ یونس بن عبید سے نقل فرماتے ہیں کہ انھوں نے حدیث کے بارے میں کہا کہ انھوں نے دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی جیسے تم پڑھتے ہو۔
(6332) (alif) Hazrat Hassan Abu Bakra (RA) se naqal farmate hain ki jab Suraj Girahan laga to hum Rasool Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ke pass thay. Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) apni chadar ko kheechte hue nikle, yahan tak ki masjid pahunch gaye. Logon ne bhi jaldi ki to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne hamen do rakat namaz parhayi. Jab Girahan khatam hua to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya: Suraj aur chand Allah ki nishaniyon mein se do nishaniyan hain. Allah in ke zariye apne bandon ko darate hain. Ye kisi ki maut o zindagi ki wajah se benoor nahi hote. Jab tum Suraj ya chand ko dekho ki inhen Girahan laga hua hai to namaz parho. Aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne ye baat us waqt kahi jab logon ne kaha ki aisa aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ke bete Ibrahim ki wajah se hua hai.
(be) Aik dusri riwayat mein Abu Ma'mar se manqol hai unhon ne "yukhawwiful lahu bihima 'ibadah" ke alfaz zikar nahi kiye.
(jeem) Aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne hamen do rakat namaz parhayi, jab aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ke bete Ibrahim foot huye. Is se murad ye hai ki aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne har rakat mein do ruku kiye, jaisa ki Jabir (RA) 'Abdullah bin Umar (RA) aur Hazrat Ayesha (RA) se sabit hai, lekin Yazid bin Zari'a waghaira Younus bin 'Ubaid se naqal farmate hain ki unhon ne hadees ke bare mein kaha ki unhon ne do rakat namaz parhayi jaise tum parhte ho.
Yazid bin Zurai narrates from Yunus that "as you (pl.) offer prayer..." but he did not mention the death of your (the Prophet's) son, and the eclipse prayer was well-known among them, so he hinted at it.

(٦٣٣٣) یزید بن زریع یونس سے نقل فرماتے ہیں کہ جیسے تم نماز پڑھتے ہو، لیکن انھوں نے آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے بیٹے کی وفات کا ذکر نہیں کیا اور نمازِ خسوف ان کے ہاں مشہور تھی، اس کی طرف اشارہ کردیا۔
Yazid bin Zarie Younus se naqal farmate hain ke jaise tum namaz parhte ho lekin unhon ne aap ke bete ki wafat ka zikr nahin kiya aur namaz e khusuf un ke han mashhoor thi is ki taraf ishara kar diya
(6334) (a) Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah (RA): I was playing with my arrows in the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ), when the sun eclipsed. I threw them away and said: I must see what the Prophet (ﷺ) does on such an occasion. I came to you (ﷺ) while you were invoking Allah and glorifying Him, with your hands raised (towards the heaven). You went on invoking and glorifying Allah until the eclipse was over. You then offered two rak`at and performed two prostrations (in them).
(b) The Statement: "You then offered two rak`at and performed two prostrations (in them)," (means) possibly the Prophet (ﷺ) performed two prostrations in each rak`ah, as it has been confirmed.

(٦٣٣٤) (الف) عبد الرحمن بن سمرہ (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ میں اپنے تیروں کے ساتھ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی زندگی میں کھیل رہا تھا۔ اچانک سورج گرہن لگا، میں نے ان کو پھینک دیا اور میں نے کہا : میں ضرور دیکھوں گا کہ آج سورج گرہن کے موقع پر نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کیا کرتے ہیں۔ میں آپ تک پہنچا آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اپنے ہاتھوں کو اٹھائے ہوئے تسبیح ‘ تحمید ‘ تحلیل وتکبیر اور دعا کر رہے تھے یہاں تک کہ سورج گرہن ختم ہوگیا، آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے دو سورتیں پڑھیں اور دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی۔
(ب) آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے دو سورتیں پڑھیں اور دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی، اس سے یہ مراد ہوسکتا ہے کہ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہر رکعت میں دو رکوعکیے جیسا کہ یہ بات ثابت ہوچکی ہے۔
(6334) (alif) Abdul Rahman bin Samrah (rz) farmate hain ke main apne teeron ke sath Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ki zindagi mein khel raha tha Achanak suraj grahan laga main ne un ko phenk diya aur main ne kaha main zaroor dekhon ga ke aaj suraj grahan ke mauqe par Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) kya karte hain Main aap tak pahoncha aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) apne hathon ko uthaye hue tasbeeh ‘ tahmeed ‘ tahleel wa takbeer aur dua kar rahe the yahan tak ke suraj grahan khatam hogaya aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne do suraten padhen aur do rakat namaz padhai
(be) Aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne do suraten padhen aur do rakat namaz padhai is se ye murad ho sakta hai ke aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne har rakat mein do ruku kiye jaisa ke ye baat sabit ho chuki hai
Nu'man bin Yazid narrated that during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the sun eclipsed. He (the Prophet) came out, dragging his cloak, in a state of fear, until he reached the mosque. He (the Prophet) then led the people in prayer and did not stop praying until the sun was bright again. Once it (the sun) became bright, he (the Prophet) said: "Verily, the sun and the moon are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah. They are not eclipsed on account of the death or birth of anyone. When you see the eclipse, therefore, remember Allah and offer prayer (as you do the obligatory prayer).

(٦٣٣٥) نعمان بن یزید فرماتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے دور میں سورج گرہن لگا تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) گھبرائے ہوئے اپنے کپڑے کو کھینچتے ہوئے مسجد آئے۔ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نماز میں مشغول رہے، یہاں تک کہ سورج روشن ہوگیا جب سورج روشن ہوا تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا کہ لوگوں کا یہ گمان ہے کہ سورج اور چاند کسی بڑے کی موت کی وجہ سے بےنور ہوتے ہیں حالانکہ اس طرح نہیں بلکہ سورج اور چاند کسی کی موت یا زندگی کی وجہ سے بےنور نہیں ہوتے بلکہ یہ تو اللہ کی نشانیوں میں سے دو نشانیاں ہیں اور اللہ اپنی مخلوق میں سے جب کسی چیز کو روشن فرماتے ہیں تو وہ اس کے لیے خشوع خضوع اختیار کرتی ہے، جب تم ان کو دیکھو تو فرض نماز کی طرح نماز پڑھو۔
(6335) Nauman bin Yazid farmate hain ke Rasool Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ke daur mein suraj grahan laga to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ghabraye huye apne kapde ko khenchte huye masjid aye. Aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) namaz mein mashgool rahe, yahan tak ke suraj roshan hogaya jab suraj roshan hua to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya ke logon ka ye gumaan hai ke suraj aur chand kisi bade ki maut ki wajah se benoor hote hain halanke is tarah nahin balke suraj aur chand kisi ki maut ya zindagi ki wajah se benoor nahin hote balke ye to Allah ki nishaniyon mein se do nishaniyan hain aur Allah apni makhlooq mein se jab kisi cheez ko roshan farmate hain to woh uske liye khushu khudoo akhtiyar karti hai, jab tum in ko dekho to farz namaz ki tarah namaz parho.
Nauman bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that there was a solar eclipse during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs and finished it with Taslim, then he prayed two rak'ahs and finished it with Taslim, until the sun became bright. The people in the pre-Islamic period used to say that when the sun is eclipsed, it is due to the death of someone great among the people of the earth. However, it is not so, but these two are among the creations of Allah. When Allah frightens any of His creations, they fear Him and when you see such a thing, pray.

(٦٣٣٦) نعمان بن بشیر (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے دور میں سورج گرہن لگا۔ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی اور سلام پھیر دیا، پھر دو رکعت نماز پڑھا کر سلام پھیر دیا۔ یہاں تک کہ سورج روشن ہوگیا۔ جاہلیت میں لوگ کہا کرتے تھے کہ جب سورج بےنور ہوتا ہے تو اہل زمین میں کسی بڑے کی موت کی وجہ سے ہوتا ہے۔ حالانکہ بات اس طرح نہیں ہے، لیکن یہ دونوں اللہ کی مخلوق میں سے ہیں جب اللہ اپنی مخلوق سے کسی کو روشن کرتا ہے تو وہ اس سے ڈرتی ہے اور جب تم اس طرح دیکھو تو نماز پڑھو۔
6336 Noman bin Bashir (RA) farmate hain ke Nabi (SAW) ke daur mein suraj grahan laga. Aap (SAW) ne do rakat namaz parhai aur salam phair diya, phir do rakat namaz parha kar salam phair diya. Yahan tak ke suraj roshan hogaya. Jahiliyat mein log kaha karte the ke jab suraj benoor hota hai to ehl-e-zameen mein kisi bade ki maut ki waja se hota hai. Halanke baat is tarah nahi hai, lekin ye donon Allah ki makhlooq mein se hain jab Allah apni makhlooq se kisi ko roshan karta hai to woh us se darti hai aur jab tum is tarah dekho to namaz parho.
Narrated by Nauman bin Bashir (رضي الله تعالى عنه): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to the mosque hurriedly, and the solar eclipse had already started. He (ﷺ) led the prayer and it continued until the sun had brightened up. Then he (ﷺ) said, "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of someone's death or life. So, when you see it, then pray and invoke (Allah) until the eclipse is over. The people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance) used to say that the sun and the moon are eclipsed because of the death of someone from amongst the great men. The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death of anyone, but these are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah. So when you see anything thereof, then hasten to remember Allah, supplicate Him and ask for His forgiveness."

(٦٣٣٧) نعمان بن بشیر (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اپنی چادر کو کھینچتے ہوئے جلدی مسجد کی طرف آتے اور سورج گرہن ہوچکا تھا۔ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے نماز پڑھی یہاں تک کہ سورج روشن ہوگیا اور آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : جاہلیت میں لوگ کہا کرتے تھے کہ سورج اور چاند زمین والوں میں سے کسی بڑے کی وجہ سی بےنور ہوتے ہیں حالانکہ سورج اور چاند کسی کی موت کی وجہ سے بےنور نہیں ہوتے کیونکہ یہ دونوں اللہ کی مخلوق ہیں اور اللہ اپنی مخلوق میں جو چاہے کرتا ہے تو ان میں سے جو بھی بےنور ہو تو تم نماز پڑھو۔ یہاں تک کہ یہ روشن ہوجائے یا پھر اللہ کوئی اور صورت نکال دیں۔
(6337) Nauman bin Bashir (RA) farmate hain ki Rasool Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) apni chadar ko khinchte hue jaldi masjid ki taraf aate aur sooraj grahan ho chuka tha. Aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne namaz parha yahaan tak ki sooraj roshan hogaya aur aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya: jahiliyat mein log kaha karte thay ki sooraj aur chand zameen walon mein se kisi bade ki wajah se benoor hote hain halanki sooraj aur chand kisi ki mout ki wajah se benoor nahin hote kyunki yeh dono Allah ki makhlooq hain aur Allah apni makhlooq mein jo chahe karta hai to in mein se jo bhi benoor ho to tum namaz parho. Yahaan tak ki yeh roshan hojae ya phir Allah koi aur soorat nikal dein.
Qubaysah Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in a prayer of two rak'ahs and prolonged the standing in those two rak'ahs. The narrator said that when the sun had brightened, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "These are signs by which Allah frightens His servants. So when you see them, pray as you pray the obligatory prayer."

(٦٣٣٨) قبیصہ ہلالی (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے دور میں سورج گرہن لگا، آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ان کو دو رکعت نماز پڑھائی اور ان دو رکعت میں قیام کو لمبا کیا۔ راوی کہتے ہیں کہ سورج روشن ہوگیا تو نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : یہ نشانیاں ہیں ان کی وجہ سے اللہ اپنے بندوں کو ڈراتا ہے پس جب تم ان کو دیکھو تو نماز پڑھو جیسا کہ تم فرض نماز پڑھتے ہو۔
6338 Qabeesa Hilali (RA) farmate hain ke Nabi (SAW) ke dor mein sooraj grahan laga, aap (SAW) ne un ko do rakat namaz parhayi aur un do rakat mein qayam ko lamba kiya. Rawi kehte hain ke sooraj roshan hogaya to Nabi (SAW) ne farmaya: Yeh nishaniyan hain in ki wajah se Allah apne bandon ko darata hai pas jab tum in ko dekho to namaz parho jaisa ke tum farz namaz parhte ho.
(6339) (a) Qabisah Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The meaning of the hadith of Musa bin Ismail is that a solar eclipse occurred, to the extent that the stars became visible. The wording of all these hadiths points to the prayer that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) offered on the day of the death of his son Ibrahim.
(b) Imam Shafi'i (may Allah be pleased with him) has argued from the hadith of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed the eclipse prayer in two rak'ahs, similar to your prayer. And the hadith of Samurah bin Jundub also carries this meaning. However, we give precedence to those hadiths that contain additional wording because additions are accepted.

(٦٣٣٩) (الف) قبیصہ ہلالی (رض) فرماتے ہیں : موسیٰ بن اسماعیل کی حدیث کے معنی ہیں کہ سورج گرہن لگا یہاں تک کہ ستارے ظاہر ہوگئے۔ یہ تمام احادیث کے الفاظ اس پر دلالت کرتے ہیں جو نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے اپنے بیٹے ابراہیم کی وفات کے دن نماز پڑھائی تھی۔
(ب) امام شافعی (رض) نے ابوبکرہ (رض) کی حدیث سے دلیل لی ہے کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے نمازِ کسوف دو رکعت تمہاری نماز کی طرح پڑھائی اور حدیث سمرہ بن جندب اسیمعنی میں ہے، لیکن ہم ان احادیث کو ترجیح دیں گے جن کے اندر کچھ الفاظ زائد ہیں کیونکہ زیادتی قبول ہوتی ہے۔
(6339) (alif) Qabeesa Hilali (rz) farmate hain : Moosa bin Ismail ki hadees ke maeny hain ke sooraj grahan laga yahan tak ke sitaare zahir hogaye. Ye tamam ahadees ke alfaaz is par dalalat karte hain jo Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne apne bete Ibrahim ki wafat ke din namaz parhayi thi.
(be) Imam Shafi (rz) ne Abubakar (rz) ki hadees se daleel li hai ke Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne namaz-e-kusuf do rakat tumhari namaz ki tarah parhayi aur hadees Samra bin Jundub is maeny mein hai, lekin hum in ahadees ko tarjeeh denge jin ke andar kuch alfaaz zaid hain kyunki ziyadati qabool hoti hai.
