Chapter on the position of the Imam during the sermon

باب مقام الإمام إذا خطب

Sunan al-Darimi 1601

Our master Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to deliver the sermon standing by the trunk of a date palm tree before the pulpit was made. Then, when the pulpit was made (and he started going towards it), the trunk cried out in a thin voice until we heard its sound. So, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his hand on it, and its sound subsided.

سیدنا جابر بن عبدالله رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا: رسول اللہ ﷺ منبر بنائے جانے سے پہلے کھجور کے ایک تنے کے پاس کھڑے ہو کر خطبہ دیا کرتے تھے۔ پھر جب منبر بنا دیا گیا (اور آپ اس کی طرف جانے لگے) تو وہ تنا باریک آواز سے رو پڑا یہاں تک کہ ہم نے اس کی آواز سنی، پس رسول اللہ ﷺ نے اس پر اپنا ہاتھ رکھا تو اس کی آواز تھم گئی۔

Sayyidna Jabir bin Abdullah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne kaha: Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) mimbar banaye jane se pehle khajoor ke aik tane ke paas kharay ho kar khutba diya karte thay. Phir jab mimbar bana diya gaya (aur aap us ki taraf jane lage) to woh tana bareek aawaz se ro para yahan tak ke hum ne us ki aawaz suni, pas Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne us par apna hath rakha to us ki aawaz thum gayi.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ:"كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُومُ إِلَى جِذْعٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُجْعَلَ الْمِنْبَرُ، فَلَمَّا جُعِلَ الْمِنْبَرُ، حَنَّ ذَلِكَ الْجِذْعُ حَتَّى سَمِعْنَا حَنِينَهُ، فَوَضَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِ، فَسَكَنَ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1602

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to deliver the sermon leaning against a trunk of a date palm tree before the pulpit was made. When the pulpit was made and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded towards it, the trunk started to cry. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) hugged it and it became quiet. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Had I not embraced it, it would have continued crying till the Day of Judgement".

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے روایت کیا کہ نبی کریم ﷺ منبر بنائے جانے سے قبل کھجور کے تنے سے لگ کر خطبہ دیا کرتے تھے، جب منبر بن گیا اور آپ اس کی طرف جانے لگے تو وہ تنا رونے لگا، آپ ﷺ نے اسے سینے سے لگایا تو وہ خاموش ہو گیا اور آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: اگر میں اسے گود میں نہ لیتا (یعنی سینے سے نہ لگاتا) تو قیامت تک روتا رہتا۔

Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne riwayat kiya keh Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) mimbar banaye jane se pehle khajoor ke tane se lag kar khutba diya karte the, jab mimbar ban gaya aur aap is ki taraf jane lage to woh tana rone laga, aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne usay seene se lagaya to woh khamosh ho gaya aur aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: agar mein isay god mein na leta (yani seene se na lagata) to qayamat tak rota rehta.

حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَخْطُبُ إِلَى جِذْعٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ الْمِنْبَرَ، فَلَمَّا اتَّخَذَ الْمِنْبَرَ، تَحَوَّلَ إِلَيْهِ، حَنَّ الْجِذْعُ فَاحْتَضَنَهُ فَسَكَنَ، وَقَالَ:"لَوْ لَمْ أَحْتَضِنْهُ، لَحَنَّ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1603

Sayyiduna Anas Radi Allahu Anhu narrated the Messenger of Allah, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, similarly.

سیدنا انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے نبی کریم ﷺ سے اسی کے مثل روایت کیا ہے۔

Sayyidna Anas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se isi ke misl riwayat kiya hai.

حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، مِثْلَهُ.

Sunan al-Darimi 1604

Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the population of Medina increased, people would come but were unable to hear the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon and would return without hearing it. So the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "O Messenger of Allah! The people have increased, and the one who comes cannot hear your words." He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Then do as you wish." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then called a young Ansar boy who was a carpenter and told him to make a pulpit from a tree trunk. He made two or three steps, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended it and began delivering the sermon. When he did so, the trunk he used to stand beside while delivering sermons started to cry with a thin sound. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to it, placed his blessed hand on it, and it became silent.

سیدنا سہل بن سعد رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: جب مدینہ میں لوگوں کی کثرت ہوئی تو لوگ آتے اور رسول اللہ ﷺ کا خطبہ سن نہیں پاتے اور ایسے ہی واپس ہو جاتے، چنانچہ صحابہ کرام نے رسول اللہ ﷺ سے عرض کیا کہ: اے اللہ کے نبی! لوگ بڑھ گئے ہیں، آنے والا آتا ہے اور آپ کا کلام سن نہیں پاتا، فرمایا: پھر تم جو چاہو، پھر رسول اللہ ﷺ نے ایک انصاری عورت کے لڑکے کو جو نجار (بڑھئی) تھا بلایا اور جنگل کے جھاؤ سے منبر بنانے کو کہا، چنانچہ اس نے دو یا تین سیڑھی بنائیں، پھر رسول اللہ ﷺ اس پر بیٹھے اور خطبہ دینے لگے، جب انہوں نے ایسا کیا تو وہ لکڑی جس کے پاس کھڑے ہو کر آپ خطبہ دیتے تھے باریک آواز سے رونے لگی، رسول اللہ ﷺ اس کے پاس گئے اور اپنا دست مبارک اس پر رکھا تو وہ چپ ہو گئی۔

Sayyidina Sahl bin Saad (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne kaha: Jab Madina mein logon ki kasrat hui to log aate aur Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ka khutba sun nahin pate aur aise hi wapas ho jate, chunanchi Sahaba kiram ne Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se arz kiya ke: Aye Allah ke Nabi! Log badh gaye hain, aane wala aata hai aur aap ka kalam sun nahin pata, farmaya: Phir tum jo chaho, phir Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne ek Ansaari aurat ke ladke ko jo najjar (barhai) tha bulaya aur jungle ke jhaon se mimbar banane ko kaha, chunanchi usne do ya teen seedhiyan banayein, phir Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) us par baithe aur khutba dene lage, jab unhon ne aisa kiya to woh lakdi jis ke pass khde ho kar aap khutba dete the bareek aawaz se rone lagi, Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) us ke pass gaye aur apna dast mubarak us par rakha to woh chup ho gayi.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا كَثُرَ النَّاسُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، جَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ يَجِيءُ وَالْقَوْمُ يَجِيئُونَ فَلَا يَكَادُونَ أَنْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَامَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى يَرْجِعُوا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّاسُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ كَثُرُوا، وَإِنَّ الْجَائِيَ يَجِيءُ فَلَا يَكَادُ يَسْمَعُ كَلَامَكَ. قَالَ:"فَمَا شِئْتُمْ"، فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَى غُلَامٍ لِامْرَأَةٍ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ، نَجَّارٍ، وَإِلَى طَرْفَاءِ الْغَابَةِ، فَجَعَلُوا لَهُ مِرْقَاتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "يَجْلِسُ عَلَيْهِ وَيَخْطُبُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ حَنَّتِ الْخَشَبَةُ الَّتِي كَانَ يَقُومُ عِنْدَهَا، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيْهَا فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا، فَسَكَنَتْ".
