Chapter on performing Hajj on behalf of someone else (Hajj 'an al-Hayy)

باب في الحج عن الحي

Sunan al-Darimi 1869

It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj, when a woman from the tribe of Khath'am came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! It is obligatory for the servants to perform Hajj, and my father has become very old, he cannot even sit on a mount, and he has not performed Hajj, can I perform Hajj on his behalf?" He (the Prophet) said: "Yes, you can." Imam Darami (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Is this your opinion as well? He said: Yes.

سیدنا فضل بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ وہ حجۃ الوداع میں رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پیچھے سواری پر تھے کہ قبیلہ خثعم کی ایک خاتون آئیں اور عرض کیا کہ اے اللہ کے رسول! اللہ کا فریضہ حج بندوں پر ادا کرنا ضروری ہے اور میرے والد بہت بزرگ ہو چکے ہیں، سواری پر بھی نہیں بیٹھ سکتے، اور انہوں نے حج نہیں کیا ہے، کیا میں ان کی طرف سے نیابۃ حج کر سکتی ہوں؟ فرمایا: ”ہاں کر سکتی ہو۔“ ابومحمد امام دارمی رحمہ اللہ سے دریافت کیا گیا: کیا آپ کا یہی قول ہے؟ فرمایا: ہاں۔

Sayyiduna Fazl bin Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki woh Hajjat al-Wida mein Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke peechhe sawari par thay ki qabeela Khath'am ki ek khatoon aayin aur arz kiya ki aye Allah ke Rasul! Allah ka fariza Hajj bandon par ada karna zaroori hai aur mere walid bahut boorha ho chuke hain, sawari par bhi nahin baith sakte, aur unhon ne Hajj nahin kiya hai, kya mein un ki taraf se niyabat Hajj kar sakti hun? Farmaya: " Haan kar sakti ho." Abu Muhammad Imam Darami Rahimahullah se daryaft kiya gaya: kya aap ka yahi qaul hai? Farmaya: Haan.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرَّقَاشِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ، جَاءَتْ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ خَثْعَمَ، فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ فَرِيضَةَ اللَّهِ فِي الْحَجِّ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ أَدْرَكَتْ أَبِي شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا لَا يَسْتَمْسِكُ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ، وَلَمْ يَحُجَّ، أَفَأَحُجُّ عَنْهُ، قَالَ:"نَعَمْ". سُئِلَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد: تَقُولُ بِهَذَا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ.

Sunan al-Darimi 1870

It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "My father is so old that he cannot sit on a mount and Hajj has become obligatory on him?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "You perform Hajj on his behalf."

سیدنا فضل بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک خاتون نے نبی کریم ﷺ سے عرض کیا کہ میرے والد اتنے بوڑھے ہیں کہ سواری پر بیٹھ نہیں سکتے اور ان پر حج فرض ہو گیا ہے؟ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”تم ان کی طرف سے حج کر لو۔“

Sayyidana Fazl bin Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki ek khatoon ne Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se arz kiya ke mere walid itne budhe hain ki sawari par beth nahin sakte aur un par Hajj farz ho gaya hai? Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Tum un ki taraf se Hajj kar lo."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ الْفَضْلِ هُوَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً سَأَلَتْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ أَبِي شَيْخٌ لَا يَسْتَوِي عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ أَدْرَكَتْهُ فَرِيضَةُ اللَّهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:"حُجِّي عَنْهُ".

Sunan al-Darimi 1871

It is narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the Farewell Pilgrimage, a woman asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a religious ruling. Sayyiduna Fadl ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both - brother of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas) was in the row of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The woman submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon His servants, and my parents have become very old, so much so that they cannot even sit on a mount. If I perform Hajj on their behalf, will it be considered their Hajj?" You (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Yes, it will be."

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ حجۃ الوداع میں ایک عورت نے رسول اللہ ﷺ سے فتویٰ پوچھا اور سیدنا فضل ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما (سیدنا عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کے بھائی) رسول اللہ ﷺ کے ردیف تھے، عرض کیا: اے اللہ کے رسول! بندوں پر الله کا فریضہ حج ضروری ہو گیا ہے اور میرے والد بہت بوڑھے ہو چکے ہیں حتیٰ کہ سواری پر بھی نہیں بیٹھ سکتے، اگر میں ان کی طرف سے حج کروں تو کیا ان کا حج ہو جائے گا؟ آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”ہاں ہو جائے گا۔“

Saina Ibne Abbas Raziallahu Anhuma se marvi hai keh Hajjatul Widah mein aik aurat ne Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se fatwa poocha aur Saina Fazal Ibne Abbas Raziallahu Anhuma (Saina Abdullah bin Abbas Raziallahu Anhuma ke bhai) Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke radif thay, arz kya: Aye Allah ke Rasool! Bandon par Allah ka farz Hajj zaroori ho gaya hai aur mere walid bohot boorhay ho chuke hain hatta keh sawari par bhi nahi baith sakte, agar mein un ki taraf se Hajj karoon to kya un ka Hajj ho jayega? Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Haan ho jayega."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً مِنْ خَثْعَمَ اسْتَفْتَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ، وَالْفَضْلُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَدِيفُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ فَرِيضَةَ اللَّهِ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ أَدْرَكَتْ أَبِي شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا، لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَسْتَوِيَ عَلَى الرَّاحِلَةِ، فَهَلْ يَقْضِي أَنْ أَحُجَّ عَنْهُ؟ قَالَ:"نَعَمْ".

The aforementioned hadith of the distributions is also narrated in this way.

اس طریق سے بھی مذکورہ بالا اوزاعی کی حدیث مروی ہے۔

Iss tareeqay se bhi mazkoora bala awzai ki hadees marvi hai.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، نَحْوًا مِنْ حَدِيثِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ.

Sunan al-Darimi 1873

Fazal bin Abbas or Ubaidullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that a person asked, "O Messenger of Allah! My mother or father is old. If I make them ride (an animal), they cannot sit properly, and if I tie them (on the animal), I fear that they may die?" You (peace and blessings of Allah be upon you) said, "What do you think, if your father or mother had a debt on you, would you pay their debt?" He replied, "Of course, I would pay." You (peace and blessings of Allah be upon you) said, "Then perform Hajj on behalf of your father or mother."

سیدنا فضل بن عباس یا سیدنا عبید الله بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہم نے بیان کیا کہ ایک شخص نے عرض کیا اے اللہ کے رسول! میری ماں یا باپ بوڑھے ہیں، اگر انہیں سوار کروں تو ٹھیک سے بیٹھ نہیں سکیں گے اور سواری پر باندھ دوں تو ڈر ہے کہ مر نہ جائیں؟ آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”تمہاری کیا رائے ہے، اگر تمہارے والد یا والدہ پر قرض ہو تو کیا تم ان کا قرض ادا کرو گے؟“ عرض کیا: بالکل ادا کروں گا، فرمایا: ”تب پھر اپنے والد یا والدہ کی طرف سے حج بھی کرو۔“

Saina Fazal bin Abbas ya Saina Ubaidullah bin Abbas razi Allah anhuma ne bayan kiya keh ek shakhs ne arz kiya aye Allah ke Rasool! meri maan ya baap budhey hain, agar unhen sawar karun to theek se baith nahin sakenge aur sawari per bandh dun to dar hai keh mar na jayen? Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: “Tumhari kya raaye hai, agar tumhare walid ya walida per qarz ho to kya tum un ka qarz ada karoge?” Arz kiya: bilkul ada karunga, farmaya: “Tab phir apne walid ya walida ki taraf se Hajj bhi karo.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، حَدَّثَنِي الْفَضْلُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَوْ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ أَبِي أَوْ أُمِّي عَجُوزٌ كَبِيرٌ، إِنْ أَنَا حَمَلْتُهَا لَمْ تَسْتَمْسِكْ، وَإِنْ رَبَطْتُهَا، خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَقْتُلَهَا. قَالَ:"أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلَى أَبِيكَ أَوْ أُمِّكَ دَيْنٌ، أَكُنْتَ تَقْضِيهِ؟". قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: "فَحُجَّ عَنْ أَبِيكَ، أَوْ أُمِّكَ".
