Chapter: How long a virgin and a previously-married woman are entitled to have the husband stay with them after marriage

باب قَدْرِ مَا تَسْتَحِقُّهُ الْبِكْرُ وَالثَّيِّبُ مِنْ إِقَامَةِ الزَّوْجِ عِنْدَهَا عَقِبَ الزِّفَافِ

Sahih Muslim 1460a

Abdul Malik bin Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham reported on the authority of his father from Ummul Momineen Umm Salama (رضي الله تعالى عنها) that when Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) married Ummul Momineen Umm Salama ( رضي الله تعالى عنها), he stayed with her for three nights, and said, there is no lack of estimation on the part of your husband for you. If you wish I can stay with you for a week, but in case I stay with you for a week, then I shall have to stay for a week with all my wives.

امام صاحب اپنے تین اساتذہ کی سند سے، حضرت ام سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے روایت بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جب حضرت ام سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے شادی کی تو اس کے ہاں تین دن ٹھہرے اور فرمایا: ”تم اپنے شوہر کی نظروں میں کم تر نہیں ہو، یا تیری وجہ سے تیرے خاندان کی حیثیت کم نہ ہو گی، اگر تم چاہو تو میں تمہارے ہاں سات دن ٹھہروں گا اور اگر تمہارے ہاں سات دن قیام کروں گا تو اپنی دوسری بیویوں کو بھی سات دن دوں گا۔“

Imam Sahab apne teen asatizah ki sanad se, Hazrat Umm Salamah (Razi Allahu Anha) se riwayat bayan karte hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne jab Hazrat Umm Salamah (Razi Allahu Anha) se shadi ki to us ke haan teen din thehre aur farmaya: "Tum apne shauhar ki nazron mein kamtar nahi ho, ya teri wajah se tere khandan ki haisiyat kam na hogi, agar tum chaho to main tumhare haan saat din thehroon ga aur agar tumhare haan saat din qiyam karoon ga to apni doosri biwiyon ko bhi saat din doon ga."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، وَيَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لأَبِي بَكْرٍ - قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَمَّا تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ أَقَامَ عِنْدَهَا ثَلاَثًا وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِكِ عَلَى أَهْلِكِ هَوَانٌ إِنْ شِئْتِ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ وَإِنْ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ سَبَّعْتُ لِنِسَائِي ‏"‏ ‏.

Sahih Muslim 1460b

Ibn Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported that when Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) married Ummul Momineen Umm Salama (رضي الله تعالى عنها) and she stayed with him (during the night), and it was dawn, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to her, there is no lack of estimation for you on the part of your husband. So, if you desire, I can spend a week with you, and if you like I may spend three (nights) and then I will visit you in turn. She said, spend three (nights).

ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جب ام سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے شادی کی اور اس کے ہاں ٹھہرے، تو اسے صبح فرمایا: ”تم اپنے خاوند کے نزدیک کم رتبہ نہیں ہو، اگر تم چاہو تو تمہارے ہاں سات دن تک ٹھہروں اور چاہو تو تین دن ٹھہر کر باری شروع کر دوں۔“ انہوں نے عرض کیا: تین دن ہی دیجیئے۔ (تاکہ باری جلد آ سکے۔)

Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne jab Umm Salamah (Razi Allahu Anha) se shadi ki aur us ke haan thehre, to use subah farmaya: "Tum apne khaawind ke nazdeek kam rutbah nahi ho, agar tum chaho to tumhare haan saat din tak thehroon aur chaho to teen din thehar kar baari shuru kar doon." Unhon ne arz kiya: Teen din hi deejiye. (Taake baari jald aa sake).

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ، الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ‏{‏ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏}‏ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حِينَ تَزَوَّجَ أَمَّ سَلَمَةَ وَأَصْبَحَتْ عِنْدَهُ قَالَ لَهَا ‏ "‏ لَيْسَ بِكِ عَلَى أَهْلِكِ هَوَانٌ إِنْ شِئْتِ سَبَّعْتُ عِنْدَكِ وَإِنْ شِئْتِ ثَلَّثْتُ ثُمَّ دُرْتُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ ثَلِّثْ ‏.‏

Sahih Muslim 1460c

Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported that when Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) married Ummul Momineen Umm Salama (رضي الله تعالى عنها) and he visited her, and when he intended to go out of her apartment, she caught hold of his cloth. whereupon Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, if you so desire, I can extend the time (of my stay) with you, but then I shall have to calculate the time (that I stay with you and shall have to spend the same time with other wives). For the virgin woman, (her husband has to stay with her) for a week, and for the woman previously married it is three days.

ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن سے روایت ہے کہ جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ام سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے شادی کی تو ان کے ہاں گئے، پھر ان کے ہاں سے نکلنے کا ارادہ کیا، تو انہوں نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا کپڑا تھام لیا۔ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اگر تم چاہو تو تمہیں اور وقت دے دیتا ہوں اور میں اس کا حساب رکھوں گا، کیونکہ کنواری کو نکاح سے سات راتیں ملتی ہیں اور شوہر دیدہ کو تین۔“

Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman se riwayat hai ke jab Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne Umm Salamah (Razi Allahu Anha) se shadi ki to un ke haan gaye, phir un ke haan se nikalne ka iradah kiya, to unhon ne aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ka kapda thaam liya. To Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Agar tum chaho to tumhen aur waqt de deta hoon aur main us ka hisab rakhoon ga, kyunki kunwari ko nikah se saat raatein milti hain aur shauhar deedah ko teen."

وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ بِلاَلٍ - عَنْ عَبْدِ، الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حِينَ تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ أَخَذَتْ بِثَوْبِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ إِنْ شِئْتِ زِدْتُكِ وَحَاسَبْتُكِ بِهِ لِلْبِكْرِ سَبْعٌ وَلِلثَّيِّبِ ثَلاَثٌ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Sahih Muslim 1460d

A Hadith like this has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Humaid.

امام صاحب یہی روایت ایک اور استاد سے بیان کرتے ہیں۔

Imam Sahab yehi riwayat ek aur ustad se bayan karte hain.

وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو ضَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ ‏.‏

Sahih Muslim 1460e

Ummul Momineen Umm Salama ( رضي الله تعالى عنها) reported that Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) married her, and he (the narrator) made mention of so many things in this connection (and one of them was this) that he said, if you desire that I spend a week with you, I shall have to spend a week with my (other) wives, and if spend a week with you, I shall have to spend a week with my (other) wives.

حضرت ام سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا بیان کرتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان سے شادی کی، اور اس سلسلہ میں ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن نے کچھ باتیں بیان کی، ان میں یہ بھی بیان کیا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اگر تم چاہو کہ میں تمہیں سات راتیں دوں تو دوسری بیویوں کو بھی سات راتیں دوں گا۔ کیونکہ اگر میں تمہیں سات راتیں دوں، تو دوسری بیویوں کو بھی سات راتیں دوں گا۔"

Hazrat Umm Salamah (Razi Allahu Anha) bayan karti hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne un se shadi ki, aur is silsilah mein Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman ne kuch baatein bayan ki, un mein yeh bhi bayan kiya ke aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Agar tum chaho ke main tumhen saat raatein doon to doosri biwiyon ko bhi saat raatein doon ga. Kyunki agar main tumhen saat raatein doon, to doosri biwiyon ko bhi saat raatein doon ga."

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ غِيَاثٍ - عَنْ عَبْدِ، الْوَاحِدِ بْنِ أَيْمَنَ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، ذَكَرَ أَنَّصلى الله عليه وسلم تَزَوَّجَهَا وَذَكَرَ أَشْيَاءَ هَذَا فِيهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنْ شِئْتِ أَنْ أُسَبِّعَ لَكِ وَأُسَبِّعَ لِنِسَائِي وَإِنْ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ سَبَّعْتُ لِنِسَائِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Sahih Muslim 1461a

Anas bin Malik (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that when anyone who has already a wife marries virgin, he should stay with her for seven nights (and then turn to his other wife), but when anyone having a virgin with him (as his wife) marries a woman who has been previously married he should stay with her for three nights. Khalid (one of the narrators) said. If I were to say that it could be directly traced to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). I would have told the truth, but Anas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said, such is the tradition.

حضرت انس بن مالک رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: اگر شوہر دیدہ کے بعد کنواری سے شادی کرے تو اس کے ہاں سات دن قیام کرے اور اگر کنواری کے بعد شوہر دیدہ سے شادی کرے تو اس کے ہاں تین دن ٹھہرے، خالد کہتے ہیں اگر میں کہوں کہ انس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے اس قول کو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی طرف منسوب کیا، تو میں سچا ہوں گا، لیکن انہوں نے کہا تھا سنت یہی ہے۔

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (Razi Allahu Anhu) ne farmaya: Agar shauhar deedah ke baad kunwari se shadi kare to us ke haan saat din qiyam kare aur agar kunwari ke baad shauhar deedah se shadi kare to us ke haan teen din thehre, Khalid kehte hain agar main kahoon ke Anas (Razi Allahu Anhu) ne is qaul ko aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ki taraf mansoob kiya, to main sacha hoon ga, lekin unhon ne kaha tha Sunnat yehi hai.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ، مَالِكٍ قَالَ إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ الْبِكْرَ عَلَى الثَّيِّبِ أَقَامَ عِنْدَهَا سَبْعًا وَإِذَا تَزَوَّجَ الثَّيِّبَ عَلَى الْبِكْرِ أَقَامَ عِنْدَهَا ثَلاَثًا ‏.‏ قَالَ خَالِدٌ وَلَوْ قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ رَفَعَهُ لَصَدَقْتُ وَلَكِنَّهُ قَالَ السُّنَّةُ كَذَلِكَ ‏.‏

Sahih Muslim 1461b

Abu Qilaba reported on the authority of Anas (رضي الله تعالى عنه), it is the Sunnah to stay with a virgin (after having married her) for a week. Khalid (one of the narrators) said, if wish I can say that it can be traced up to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).

حضرت انس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں، سنت یہ ہے کہ کنواری کے ہاں سات دن ٹھہرے، خالد کہتے ہیں، اگر میں چاہوں تو کہہ سکتا ہوں۔ انہوں نے اس کی نسبت نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی طرف کی۔

Hazrat Anas (Razi Allahu Anhu) bayan karte hain, Sunnat yeh hai ke kunwari ke haan saat din thehre, Khalid kehte hain, agar main chahoon to keh sakta hoon. Unhon ne is ki nisbat Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ki taraf ki.

وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، وَخَالِدٍ، الْحَذَّاءِ عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ أَنْ يُقِيمَ، عِنْدَ الْبِكْرِ سَبْعًا ‏.‏ قَالَ خَالِدٌ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ قُلْتُ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏
