Chapter: What is Used to Wash the Deceased and the Sunnah of Repeating the Washing
باب ما يغسل به الميت وسنة التكرار في غسله

Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, he came to us and said, "Wash her three times or five times, or more than that if you see fit, with water and lotus leaves, and finally apply camphor or something similar to it. And when you have finished, inform me." She said: When we had finished, we informed him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he gave us his izaar (waist-wrapper) and said, "Shroud her in it."

(٦٦٣١) ام عطیہ انصاریہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ جب آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی بیٹی فوت ہوئی تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) ہمارے پاس آئے اور فرمایا : تین تین یا پانچ پانچ مرتبہ غسل دینا یا اس سے زیادہ اگر تم اس کی ضرورت محسوس کرو اور غسل دو پانی اور بیری کے پتوں سے اور آخر میں کافور لگانا یا کافور جیسی کوئی اور چیز اور جب تم فارغ ہو جاؤ تو مجھے آگاہ کرنا۔ وہ کہتی ہیں : جب ہم فارغ ہوئیں تو ہم نے آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کو اطلاع دی تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہمیں ” حقوۃ “ دی اور فرمایا : اس کی مینڈھیاں بھی کرنا۔ حقوۃ سے مراد چادر ہے۔
(6631) Um Atiya Ansari (RA) se riwayat hai ki jab aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ki beti فوت hui to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) humare pass aye aur farmaya: teen teen ya panch panch martaba ghusl dena ya is se ziada agar tum is ki zarurat mehsoos karo aur ghusl do pani aur beri ke patton se aur akhir mein kaphur lagana ya kaphur jaisi koi aur cheez aur jab tum farigh ho jao to mujhe aagah karna. Wo kahti hain: jab hum farigh huyeen to humne aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ko ittila di to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne humein “Haqooq” di aur farmaya: is ki mendhiyan bhi karna. Haqooq se murad chadar hai.
Umm Atiyyah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that a daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us and said: "Wash her with water and leaves of the lote tree, and wash her an odd number of times, three or five or more than that if you deem it necessary, and at the end, apply camphor or something like camphor. And when you finish, inform me." She said: "When we finished, we informed him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave us a garment and said: "Shroud her in it." Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "We made three braids of her hair and then placed two in front and one at the back."

(٦٦٣٢) ام عطیہ انصاریہ (رض) بیان کرتی ہیں کہ نبی کریم (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی ایک بیٹی فوت ہوگئی۔ سو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) ہمارے پاس آئے اور فرمایا : اسے غسل دینا پانی اور بیری کے ساتھ اور غسل دینا طاق عدد تین یا پانچ مرتبہ یا اس سے بھی زیادہ مرتبہ۔ اگر تم اس کی ضرورت محسوس کرو اور اس کے آخر میں کا فور یا کافور جیسے کوئی اور چیز لگانا اور جب تم فارغ ہو جاؤ تو مجھے بتانا ۔ وہ کہتی ہیں : جب ہم فارغ ہوگئیں تو ہم نے آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کو اطلاع دی تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہمیں ایک چادر دی اور فرمایا : اس کی میڈھیاں بھی کرنا۔ ام عطیہ (رض) کہتی ہیں : ہم نے ان کے سر کی تین مینڈھیاں کیں۔ پھر ان کو دو کو سامنے اور ایک کو پیچھے ڈال دیا۔
(6632) Um Atiya Ansari (RA) bayan karti hain keh Nabi Kareem ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ki aik beti foot hogayi. So aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) humare pass aaye aur farmaya: Ise ghusl dena pani aur beri ke sath aur ghusl dena taq adad teen ya panch martaba ya is se bhi zyada martaba. Agar tum iski zarurat mehsoos karo aur iske akhir mein kafoor ya kafoor jaise koi aur cheez lagana aur jab tum farigh ho jao to mujhe batana. Wo kehti hain: Jab hum farigh hogayin to humne aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ko ittila di to aap ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne humain aik chadar di aur farmaya: Iski maidiyan bhi karna. Um Atiya (RA) kehti hain: Humne unke sar ki teen maidiyan ki. Phir unko do ko samne aur aik ko peeche daal diya.
Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a daughter who passed away. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that if you see fit, with water and lotus leaves, and finally apply camphor or something like camphor. When you have finished, inform me.' So when we had finished, we informed him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave us a waist-wrapper and said: 'Shroud her,' and he said: 'Three, five, or seven times, or more than that if you see fit.' She said: 'And we braided her hair into four braids.'"

(٦٦٣٣) ام عطیہ (رض) کہتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی ایک بیٹی فوت ہوگئی تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : اسے تین یا پانچ مرتبہ غسل دینا یا اس سے زیادہ مرتبہ بھی اگر ضرورت محسوس ہو۔ پانی اور بیری سے غسل دینا اور آخر میں کافور لگانا یا کافور جیسی کوئی چیز اور جب تم فارغ ہو جاؤ تو مجھے بتا دینا۔ سو جب ہم فارغ ہوئیں تو ہم نے آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کو آگاہ کیا تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے ہمیں ایک چادر دی۔ آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے مزید فرمایا کہ اس کے مینڈھیاں بھی کرنا اور یہ بھی فرمایا : تین ، پانچ یا سات مرتبہ یا اس سے بھی زیادہ اگر ضرورت محسوس ہو۔ وہ کہتی ہیں اور ہم نے اس کے سر کی چار مینڈھیاں کیں۔
(6633) Umme Atiya (RA) kahti hain ke Rasool Allah (SAW) ki aik beti foot hogayi to aap (SAW) ne farmaya: Use teen ya paanch martaba ghusl dena ya us se ziada martaba bhi agar zaroorat mehsoos ho. Pani aur beri se ghusl dena aur akhir mein kafoor lagana ya kafoor jaisi koi cheez aur jab tum farigh ho jao to mujhe bata dena. So jab hum farigh huyeen to humne aap (SAW) ko agah kiya to aap (SAW) ne humein ek chadar di. Aap (SAW) ne mazeed farmaya ke uske mendhiyan bhi karna aur ye bhi farmaya: Teen, paanch ya saat martaba ya us se bhi ziada agar zaroorat mehsoos ho. Wo kahti hain aur humne uske sar ki chaar mendhiyan ki.
Muhammad bin Sirin reported: He learned the method of bathing the deceased from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). She would bathe with berry leaves twice, and the third time with water and camphor. It was narrated from Abdullah bin Amr that his father advised him, "O my son, when I die, bathe me once with water." Ata said: "Bathing once is sufficient for me." Umar bin Abdul Aziz said: "There is no specific number of times." Ibrahim said: "There is no harm if there are no berry leaves, etc." The companions of Abdullah used to bathe the deceased once, shroud them in one cloth, and pray the funeral prayer once.

(٦٦٣٤) محمد بن سیرین بیان کرتے ہیں : انھوں نے غسل کا طریقہ ام عطیہ (رض) سے لیا۔ وہ غسل دیتیں بیری کے ساتھ دو مرتبہ اور تیسری مرتبہ پانی اور کا فور کے ساتھ اور عبداللہ بن عمرو سے بیان کیا گیا کہ اس کے باپ نے وصیت کی کہ اے میرے بیٹے ! جب میں فوت ہو جاؤں تو مجھے ایک مرتبہ پانی سے غسل دینا۔ عطاء کہتے ہیں : مجھ کو ایک مرتبہ غسل دینا کافی ہے۔ عمر بن عبد العزیز کہتے ہیں اس میں کوئی چیز مقرر نہیں اور ابراہیم کہتے ہیں : جب بیری وغیرہ نہ ہو تو کوئی حرج نہیں اور اصحاب عبداللہ کہتے تھے کہ میت کو ایک ایک مرتبہ غسل دیا جائے اور ایک ہی کفن اور ایک ہی مرتبہ استنجاء کروانا ہے۔
(6634) Muhammad bin Sairin bayan karte hain : unhon ne ghusl ka tareeqa Um Atiya (RA) se liya. Wo ghusl deti thin beri ke sath do martaba aur teesri martaba pani aur kafoor ke sath aur Abdullah bin Amro se bayan kiya gaya ke uske baap ne wasiyat ki ke aye mere bete ! Jab main fout ho jaon to mujhe ek martaba pani se ghusl dena. Ata kehte hain : mujhe ek martaba ghusl dena kaafi hai. Umar bin Abdul Aziz kehte hain isme koi cheez muqarrar nahin aur Ibrahim kehte hain : jab beri waghaira na ho to koi harj nahin aur ashaab Abdullah kehte the ke mayyat ko ek ek martaba ghusl diya jaye aur ek hi kafan aur ek hi martaba istinja karwana hai.
Ibrahim narrated from the companions of Abdullah. They said: The deceased should be given a bath with an odd number of water pourings, and should be given an odd number of shrouds, and should have an odd number of layers of shrouds.

(٦٦٣٥) ابراہیم اصحاب عبداللہ سے بیان کرتے ہیں۔ انھوں نے کہا کہ میت کو طاق عدد میں غسل دیا جائے اور طاق ہی کفن دیا جائے اور طاق ہی میڈھیاں کی جائیں۔
