Chapter on the Indication that Ghusl on Friday is Recommended When Intending It
باب الدلالة على أن الغسل يوم الجمعة سنة اختيار
Sunan al-Kubra Bayhaqi 1403
Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father that a companion entered the mosque on Friday while Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering the sermon. He (Umar) asked, "What is the time?" He (the companion) replied, "O Leader of the Believers! I have just come from the market. I heard the Adhan, performed ablution and came here." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Only ablution? Whereas you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to order for taking a bath (Ghusl)."

(٤١٠٣) سالم بن عبداللہ بن عمر (رض) اپنے والد سے نقل فرماتے ہیں کہ ایک صحابی جمعہ کے دن مسجد میں داخل ہوئے، سیدنا عمر (رض) خطبہ دے رہے تھے ، آپ (رض) نے کہا : یہ کونسا وقت ہے ؟ اس نے کہا : اے امیرالمومنین ! میں بازار سے لوٹا، میں نے اذان سنی ، وضو کیا اور میں آگیا۔ سیدنا عمر (رض) نے کہا : صرف وضو ؟ حالانکہ تو جانتا ہے کہ رسول اللہ غسل کا حکم دیا کرتے تھے۔
4103 Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar (RA) apne walid se naql farmate hain ki ek sahabi jumma ke din masjid mein dakhil hue, Sayyiduna Umar (RA) khutba de rahe the, aap (RA) ne kaha: ye konsa waqt hai? usne kaha: aye ameerul momineen! mein bazaar se lota, maine azan suni, wuzu kiya aur mein aa gaya. Sayyiduna Umar (RA) ne kaha: sirf wuzu? halanki tu janta hai ki Rasul Allah ghusl ka hukum diya karte the.
(1404) (a) Narrated Ibn 'Umar (RA): While 'Umar bin Khattab (RA) was delivering the Friday sermon, a man from the early emigrants came. 'Umar (RA) called out to him, "What is the matter with you? What time is this (to come to the mosque)?" He replied, "I was busy today and could not go home. When I heard the Adhan, I only had time to perform Wudu'." 'Umar (RA) said, "Only Wudu', while you know that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered us to take a bath (on this occasion)." (b) This hadith has been narrated by Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy upon him) from Abdullah bin Asma. Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him) has narrated it in the Muwatta through a mursal chain and did not mention Abdullah bin 'Umar (RA) in the chain of narrators. This hadith has been narrated in the form of mursal besides the Muwatta and this is more correct. It has also been narrated from Imam Zuhri in the form of mursal.

(١٤٠٤) (الف) سیدنا ابن عمر (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ عمر بن خطاب (رض) کھڑے ہو کر جمعہ کا خطبہ دے رہے تھے، اچانک ایک شخص اولین مہاجرین میں سے آیا، سیدنا عمر (رض) نے اس کو آواز دی کہ یہ کونسا وقت ہے ؟ اس نے کہا : آج میں مصروف رہا۔ میں اپنے گھر نہیں گیا، میں نے اذان سنی تو میں وضو کرنے سے زیادہ نہیں کرسکا۔ سیدنا عمر (رض) نے کہا : صرف وضو ؟ حالانکہ تو جانتا ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) غسل کا حکم دیا کرتے تھے۔ (ب) امام بخاری (رح) نے عبداللہ بن اسماء سے یہ روایت بیان کی ہے۔ امام مالک (رح) نے مؤطا میں مرسل نقل کی ہے اور سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر (رض) کا سند میں ذکر نہیں کیا۔ مؤطا کے علاوہ میں موصولاً بیان کی گئی ہے اور یہی صحیح ہے۔ امام زہری سے بھی یہ موصولاً منقول ہے۔
(1404) (alif) Sayyidina Ibn Umar (RA) se riwayat hai ki Umar bin Khattab (RA) kharay ho kar juma ka khutba de rahay thay, achanak aik shakhs awwaleen muhajireen mein se aaya, Sayyidina Umar (RA) ne us ko aawaz di ki yeh konsa waqt hai? Us ne kaha: aaj main masroof raha. Main apne ghar nahi gaya, maine azan suni to main wuzu karne se ziada nahi kar saka. Sayyidina Umar (RA) ne kaha: sirf wuzu? Halaanke tu janta hai ki Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ghusl ka hukum diya karte thay. (be) Imam Bukhari (RA) ne Abdullah bin Asma se yeh riwayat bayan ki hai. Imam Maalik (RA) ne Muwatta mein mursalan naqal ki hai aur Sayyidina Abdullah bin Umar (RA) ka sanad mein zikar nahi kiya. Muwatta ke ilawa mein mawsoolan bayan ki gayi hai aur yahi sahi hai. Imam Zuhri se bhi yeh mawsoolan manqool hai.
(1405) (a) Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): While Umar bin Al-Khattab (RA) was delivering the Khutbah (sermon) on Friday, Uthman bin Affan (RA) entered the mosque. Umar (RA), addressing him, said, "What is the matter with these people who come after the Adhan?" Uthman (RA) replied, "O Amir al-Mu'minin! When I heard the Adhan, I only performed Wudu and came to the mosque." Umar (RA) said, "Only Wudu? Didn't you hear the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying that when one of you comes for Friday, he should take a bath?"
(b) Imam Shafi'i (RA) said that Uthman (RA) did not leave the prayer for Ghusl (ritual bath), and Umar (RA) did not order him to go out for Ghusl. This is evidence that both of them knew that the order of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was optional.

(١٤٠٥) (الف) سیدنا ابوہریرہ (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ عمربن خطاب (رض) جمعہ کے دن لوگوں کو خطبہ دے رہے تھے، عثمان بن عفان (رض) مسجد میں داخل ہوئے، سیدنا عمر (رض) نے انھیں متوجہ کرتے ہوئے کہا : ان آدمیوں کا کیا حال ہے جو اذان کے بعد آتے ہیں ؟ سیدنا عثمان (رض) نے کہا : اے امیرالمومنین ! جب میں نے اذان سنی تو صرف وضو کیا اور مسجد میں آگیا، سیدنا عمر (رض) نے کہا : صرف وضو ؟ کیا تو نے رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کو فرماتے ہوئے نہیں سنا کہ جب کوئی جمعہ کو آئے تو وہ غسل کرے۔ (ب) امام شافعی (رح) کہتے ہیں کہ سیدنا عثمان (رض) نے غسل کے لیے نماز نہیں چھوڑی اور سیدنا عمر (رض) نے انھیں غسل کے لیے باہر جانے کا حکم نہیں دیا، یہ اس بات پر دلیل ہے کہ دونوں کے علم میں تھا کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کا حکم اختیاری ہے۔
(1405) (alif) Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) farmate hain ke Umar bin Khattab (RA) juma ke din logon ko khutba de rahe the, Usman bin Affan (RA) masjid mein dakhil hue, Sayyiduna Umar (RA) ne unhen mutawajjeh karte hue kaha: In aadmiyon ka kya haal hai jo azan ke baad aate hain? Sayyiduna Usman (RA) ne kaha: Aye Amir-ul-Momineen! Jab maine azan suni to sirf wazu kiya aur masjid mein aagya, Sayyiduna Umar (RA) ne kaha: Sirf wazu? Kya tune Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ko farmate hue nahin suna ke jab koi juma ko aaye to woh ghusl kare. (be) Imam Shafi (RA) kahte hain ke Sayyiduna Usman (RA) ne ghusl ke liye namaz nahin chhori aur Sayyiduna Umar (RA) ne unhen ghusl ke liye bahar jaane ka hukum nahin diya, yeh is baat par daleel hai ke donon ke ilm mein tha ke Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ka hukum ikhtiyari hai.
Yahya bin Saeed said: "I asked Umar ibn al-Khattab about taking a bath on Friday, and he said: 'I asked Aisha about taking a bath on Friday, and she said: "The people used to work, and they would come back (home) in the evening in that state, so they were told: ‘If you take a bath (it is better).’"

(١٤٠٦) یحییٰ بن سعید کہتے ہیں : میں نے جمعہ کے دن غسل سے متعلق سیدنا عمر (رض) سے سوال کیا تو انھوں نے فرمایا : میں نے سیدہ عائشہ (رض) سے جمعہ کے دن غسل کے متعلق سوال کیا تو انھوں نے فرمایا : لوگ خود کام کاج کرنے والے تھے اور شام کو اسی حالت میں واپس آتے تھے ان سے کہا گیا : اگر تم غسل کرلو (تو بہت بہتر ہے) ۔
1406 Yahya bin Saeed kehte hain : maine juma ke din ghusl se mutalliq Sayyiduna Umar (RA) se sawal kiya to unhon ne farmaya : maine Sayyida Ayesha (RA) se juma ke din ghusl ke mutalliq sawal kiya to unhon ne farmaya : log khud kaam kaj karne wale the aur sham ko usi halat mein wapas aate the un se kaha gaya : agar tum ghusl karlo (to bahut behtar hai) .
(1407) It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidina Ikrama (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people from Iraq came and said: "O Ibn Abbas! What do you think, is it obligatory to take a bath on Friday?" He said, "No, but it is better for the one who takes a bath and it is not obligatory on the one who does not take a bath. I will soon tell you how the beginning of bathing (on Friday) came about. People used to work and wear wool clothes and work on their farms, and the mosque had a narrow roof, it was only (of palm leaves, etc.). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out on a hot day, and the people were sweating in their wool clothes, and a bad smell spread from them (in the mosque), which bothered some people. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smelled the bad smell, he said, 'O people! When it is Friday, take a bath and whoever among you has oil and perfume, let him apply it." Sayyidina Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Then Allah Almighty granted them spaciousness, so they stopped wearing wool clothes and stopped working (on that day) and their mosques became spacious and the discomfort that used to occur due to sweat was gone."

(١٤٠٧) سیدنا عکرمہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ عراق کے کچھ لوگ آئے اور کہنے لگے : اے ابن عباس ! آپ کا کیا خیال ہے، کیا جمعہ کے دن غسل واجب ہے ؟ انھوں نے کہا : نہیں، لیکن بہتر ہے اس شخص کے لیے جس نے غسل کیا اور جس نے غسل نہ کیا اس پر واجب نہیں ہے۔ میں عنقریب آپ کو بتاؤں گا کہ غسل کی ابتدا کی سے ہوئی ؟ لوگ کام کرتی تھے اور اون کے کپڑے پہنتے تھے اور اپنی کمروں پر کام کرتے تھے ، مسجد تنگ چھتوں والی ہوتی تھی، وہ صرف (کھجوروں وغیرہ کے) پتے ہوتے تھے، رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) گرم دن میں نکلے، اور لوگوں کو اون کے کپڑوں میں پسینہ آیا ہوا تھا ان سے (مسجد میں) بدبو پھیلی جس سے بعض لوگوں کو تکلیف ہوئی، جب رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے بدبو کو محسوس کیا تو آپ نے فرمایا : اے لوگو ! جب جمعہ کا دن ہو تو غسل کرو اور تم سے کسی کے پاس تیل اور خوشبوہو تو اس کو لگائے۔ سیدنا ابن عباس (رض) کہتے ہیں کہ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ وسعت عطا کی تو انھوں نے اون کے کپڑے پہننا چھوڑ دے اور کام کرنے سے رک گئے اور ان کی مسجدیں وسیع ہوگئیں اور پسینوں کی وجہ سے جو تکلیف ہوتی تھی وہ دور ہوں گئی۔
Saydna Akarma (Razi Allah Anhu) se riwayat hai ki Iraq ke kuch log aaye aur kahne lage: Aye Ibn Abbas! Aap ka kya khayaal hai, kya Jumma ke din ghusl wajib hai? Unhon ne kaha: Nahin, lekin behtar hai us shakhs ke liye jisne ghusl kiya aur jisne ghusl nah kia us par wajib nahin hai. Mein anqarib aap ko bataunga ki ghusl ki ibtida ki se hui? Log kaam karti the aur oon ke kapde pehente the aur apni kamron par kaam karte the, masjid tang chhaton wali hoti thi, woh sirf (khajooron waghaira ke) patte hote the, Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) garm din mein nikle, aur logon ko oon ke kapdon mein paseena aaya tha unse (masjid mein) badbu pheli jisse baaz logon ko takleef hui, jab Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne badbu ko mehsoos kiya to aap ne farmaya: Aye logo! Jab Jumma ka din ho to ghusl karo aur tum se kisi ke paas tel aur khushbu ho to us ko lagaye. Saydna Ibn Abbas (Razi Allah Anhu) kahte hain ki phir Allah Ta'ala wusat ata ki to unhon ne oon ke kapde pehenna chhod diye aur kaam karne se ruk gaye aur un ki masjidain wasee ho gayin aur paseenon ki wajah se jo takleef hoti thi woh door ho gayi.
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution, he has done well and it will suffice for the obligatory prayer, and whoever performs ghusl (ritual bath), then it is more virtuous."

(١٤٠٨) سیدنا ابن عباس (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : ” جس نے وضو کیا اس نے اچھا کیا اور فریضہ سے کفایت کرجائے گا اور جس نییہ کیا تو غسل افضل ہے۔ “
(1408) Syedna Ibn Abbas (RA) farmate hain ke Rasul Allah (SAW) ne farmaya : " Jis ne wuzu kiya us ne acha kiya aur farz se kafiyat kar jaye ga aur jis ne niya kiya to ghusl afzal hai ".
(1409) Narrated Samura (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever performs ablution on Friday, has done well; but he who takes a bath is better."

(١٤٠٩) سیدنا سمرہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : ” جس نے جمعہ کے دن وضو کیا، اس نے اچھا کیا اور جس نے غسل کیا وہ افضل ہے۔ “
(1409) syedna samrah (rz) se riwayat hai ke nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya : "jisne jumma ke din wuzu kiya, usne achha kiya aur jisne ghusl kiya woh afzal hai."
Samura reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, it is good; and whoever takes a bath, that bath is better." (b) This has also been narrated by Sa'id b. Abu 'Arubah in the mursal form.

(١٤١٠) سیدنا سمرہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : ” جس نے جمعہ کے دن غسل کیا، اس نے اچھا کیا اور جس نے غسل کیا تو غسل افضل ہے۔ “ (ب) سعید بن ابو عروبہ نے اس کو مرسلاً نقل کیا ہے۔
(1410) Saidina Samra (RA) se riwayat hai keh Rasul Allah (SAW) ne farmaya : " Jis ne juma ke din ghusl kiya, us ne acha kiya aur jis ne ghusl kiya to ghusl afzal hai. " (b) Said bin Abu Aruba ne is ko mursalan naqal kiya hai.
Narrated by Sayyidina Abdur Rahman bin Samra (RA) that I have acquired this Hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that “Whoever performs Wudu has done good and whoever performs Ghusl then Ghusl is better."

(١٤١٢) سیدنا عبدالرحمن بن سمرہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ میں نے اس حدیث کو نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) سے حاصل کیا ہے کہ ” جس نے وضو کیا اس نے اچھا کیا اور جس نے غسل کیا تو غسل افضل ہے۔ “
(1412) Sayyidina Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (RA) se riwayat hai ki maine is hadees ko Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) se hasil kiya hai ki "Jis ne wuzu kiya us ne achcha kiya aur jis ne ghusl kiya to ghusl afzal hai."
(1413) It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), with this chain, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:… And there is no doubt about it.
(B) It was narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ) with another chain, but it is not very sound.

(١٤١٣) ابی حُرّہ (رض) نے اسی سند سے نقل کیا ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا۔۔۔ اور اس میں شک نہیں ہے۔
(ب) ایک دوسری سند سے نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) سے نقل کیا گیا ہے لیکن وہ محل نظر ہے۔
(1413) abi hurra (ra) ne isi sanad se naqal kiya hai ke rasool allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya... aur is mein shak nahin hai.
(b) ek doosri sanad se nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) se naqal kiya gaya hai lekin woh mahal nazar hai.
Hadith Number: (1414)
Narrated Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever performs Wudu’ on Friday, it is good, and whoever takes a bath, then it is better, and it is Sunnah.”
Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) did not mention these words: “and taking a bath is Sunnah.”

(١٤١٤) سیدنا انس بن مالک (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : ” جس نے جمعہ کے دن وضو کیا اس نے اچھا کیا اور جس نے غسل کیا تو غسل افضل ہے اور غسل سنت ہے۔ “ امام ابوداؤد (رح) نے یہ الفاظ ذکر نہیں کیے ” وَالْغُسْلُ مِنَ السُّنَّۃِ “
Sayyidna Anas bin Malik (RA) se riwayat hai ki Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya: "Jisne Jumma ke din wuzu kiya usne achcha kiya aur jisne ghusl kiya to ghusl afzal hai aur ghusl sunnat hai." Imam Abu Dawud (RA) ne ye alfaz zikr nahin kiye "wal ghuslu min-as-sunnati".
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidina Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever comes for Friday prayer, let him perform Ghusl (ritual bath).” When winter came, it became difficult for us, so we complained about it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever performs Wudu (ablution), he has done well, and whoever performs Ghusl, then Ghusl is better.”

(١٤١٥) سیدنا انس بن مالک (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : جو شخص جمعہ کے لیے آئے تو وہ غسل کرے، جب سردی آگئی تو ہم پر مشکل ہوگیا، ہم نے اس کی شکایت نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) سے کی تو آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : ” جس نے وضو کیا اس نے اچھا کیا اور جس نے غسل کیا تو غسل افضل ہے۔ “
Sayyidna Anas bin Malik (RA) se riwayat hai ki Rasul Allah (SAW) ne farmaya: Jo shakhs Jumma ke liye aaye to woh ghusl kare, jab sardi aa gayi to hum par mushkil ho gaya, hum ne is ki shikayat Nabi (SAW) se ki to aap (SAW) ne farmaya: "Jis ne wuzu kiya us ne achcha kiya aur jis ne ghusl kiya to ghusl afzal hai."
Narrated Abu Sa'id (RA): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever performs ablution on Friday, it is good; and whoever takes a bath, it is better."

(١٤١٦) سیدنا ابو سعید (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : ” جس نے جمعہ کے دن وضو کیا اس نے اچھا کیا اور جس نے غسل کیا تو غسل افضل ہے۔ “
(1416) syedna abu saeed (rz) se riwayat hai ki rasool allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya : ” jis ne jumma ke din wuzu kiya us ne achha kiya aur jis ne ghusl kiya to ghusl afzal hai “.
