Chapter on the Evidence That 'Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim' Is a Complete Verse of Al-Fatihah
باب الدليل على أن بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم آية تامة من الفاتحة
Sunan al-Kubra Bayhaqi 2383
Abdullah bin Abi Malika narrates from Ummul Mu'minin Umme Salma (may Allah be pleased with her) that she mentioned the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (the narrator is unsure whether the words were "mentioned" or something similar). He would recite: {Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil Alameen. Ar-Rahmanir-Raheem. Maliki Yawmid-Deen} meaning, he would recite each verse separately.

(٢٣٨٣) عبداللہ بن ابی ملیکہ ام المومنین ام سلمہ (رض) سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ انھوں نے رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی قرات کا ذکر کیا (راوی کو شک ہے کہ ذکرت کے الفاظ ہیں یا کچھ اور ہیں) آپ پڑھتے تھے : { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ ، الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ ، مَالِکِ یَوْمِ الدِّینِ } یعنی ہر آیت کو الگ الگ کر کے پڑھتے تھے۔
Abdullah bin Abi Malika Umm ul Momineen Umm Salma (Razi Allah Anha) se riwayat karte hain ki unhon ne Rasulullah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ki qirat ka zikar kiya (rawi ko shak hai ki zikar ke alfaz hain ya kuchh aur hain) Aap parhte thay: {Bismillah hir Rehman nir Raheem, Alhamdulillah hi Rabb il Aalimeen, Ar Rehman ir Raheem, Maliki Yaumid Deen} yani har ayat ko alag alag kar ke parhte thay.
Ibn Abu Malikah narrated that Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recitation was like this: {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ} meaning he would recite each verse separately.

(٢٣٨٤) ابن ابی ملیکہ سیدہ ام سلمہ (رض) سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی قرات اس طرح تھی :{ بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ } یعنی ہر آیت الگ الگ کر کے پڑھتے تھے۔
(2384) Ibne Abi Malika Syeda Umme Salma (Raz) se riwayat karte hain ke Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ki qirat is tarah thi: {Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen} yani har ayat alag alag kar ke parhte thay.
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite in prayer, "{بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ}" (Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem) and count it as one verse, "{الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ}" (Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alamin) as two verses, "{الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ}" (Ar-Rahmanir-Raheem) as three verses, "{مَلِکِ یَوْمِ الدِّینِ}" (Maliki Yaumiddin) as four verses, and likewise "{إِیَّاکَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِیَّاکَ نَسْتَعِینُ}" (Iyyaka Na'budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta'een) as the fifth verse, counting them on his five fingers.

(٢٣٨٥) سیدہ ام سلمہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے نماز میں { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } پڑھی اور اس کو ایک آیت شمار کیا، { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ } کو دو آیتیں، { الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } کو تین آیات، { مَلِکِ یَوْمِ الدِّینِ } کو چار آیات اور اسی طرح {إِیَّاکَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِیَّاکَ نَسْتَعِینُ } کو پانچویں آیت اپنی پانچوں انگلیوں پر شمار کرتے تھے۔
Sayyidah Umm Salma (RA) se riwayat hai ke Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne namaz mein Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem parhi aur isko ek aayat shumaar kiya, Alhamdulillah hi Rabbil Aalameen ko do aayatein, Ar Rahman nir Raheem ko teen aayatein, Maliki Yaumid Deen ko chaar aayatein aur isi tarah Iyyaka Na'budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta'een ko paanchwein aayat apni paanchon ungliyon par shumaar karte thay.
(2386) Ibn Juraij narrated from his father that he heard Sa'id bin Jubair say that the Ayah "And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses]..." (Al-Hijr: 87) refers to Surah Al-Fatihah.
(b) (Ibn Juraij narrated from his father) Sa'id bin Jubair recited "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim" to me and then recited the whole Surah Al-Fatihah. Then he said: "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim" (is) the seventh Ayah.
(c) Sa'id bin Jubair said to my father: "Ibn 'Abbas recited this Surah to me in the same way as I recited it to you." Then he said: "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim" (is) the seventh Ayah.
(d) Ibn 'Abbas said: "Allah had kept this Surah in store for you (this Ummah - Muslims), He did not reveal it to any nation before you."

(٢٣٨٦) ابن جریج فرماتے ہیں : مجھے میرے والد محترم نے خبر دی کہ سعید بن جبیر نے فرمایا کہ { وَلَقَدْ آتَیْنَاکَ سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِی } [الحجر : ٨٧] ” اور ہم نے آپ کو سات بار بار پڑھی جانے والی آیات عطا کیں “ سے مراد سورة فاتحہ ہے۔
(ب) (ابن جریج اپنے والد سے نقل کرتے ہیں کہ مجھ پر سعید بن جبیر نے { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } تلاوت کی حتی کہ مکمل سورة فاتحہ کو ختم کیا۔ پھر فرمایا : { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } (سورة فاتحہ کی) ساتویں آیت ہے۔
(ج) سعید بن جبیر نے میرے والد سے کہا : اس سورت کو ابن عباس (رض) نے مجھ پر اسی طرح تلاوت کیا تھا، جس طرح میں نے تیرے سامنے اسے پڑھا ہے۔ پھر فرمایا : { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } (سورة فاتحہ کی) ساتویں آیت ہے۔
(د) ابن عباس (رض) فرماتے ہیں : اللہ نے یہ سورت تمہارے لیے ذخیرہ کر رکھی تھی، یہ اللہ نے تم سے پہلے کسی امت کے لیے نہیں اتاری۔
2386 Ibn Juraij farmate hain : mujhe mere walid muhtram ne khabar di ke Saeed bin Jubair ne farmaya ke { wa laqad ataynaka sab'an minal mathani } [al-Hijr : 87] ” aur hum ne aap ko saat bar bar parha jane wali ayat ata ki hain “ se murad Surah Fatiha hai.
(b) (Ibn Juraij apne walid se naqal karte hain ke mujh par Saeed bin Jubair ne { bismilla hir rahmanir rahim } tilawat ki hatta ke mukammal Surah Fatiha ko khatam kya. Phir farmaya : { bismilla hir rahmanir rahim } (Surah Fatiha ki) saatween ayat hai.
(j) Saeed bin Jubair ne mere walid se kaha : is surat ko Ibn Abbas (rz) ne mujh par isi tarah tilawat kya tha, jis tarah maine tere samne ise parha hai. Phir farmaya : { bismilla hir rahmanir rahim } (Surah Fatiha ki) saatween ayat hai.
(d) Ibn Abbas (rz) farmate hain : Allah ne yeh surat tumhare liye zakhira kar rakhi thi, yeh Allah ne tum se pehle kisi ummat ke liye nahi utari.
Narrated Sa'id bin Jubair: Ibn 'Abbas (RA) regarding Allah's saying: {And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated verses}, (Al-Hijr : 87) said that it refers to Surah Fatiha. It was asked to Ibn 'Abbas (RA) which one is the seventh verse? He said: { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } (In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful).

(٢٣٨٧) سعید بن جبیر سے روایت ہے کہ ابن عباس (رض) اللہ کے فرمان { وَلَقَدْ آتَیْنَاکَ سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِی } (الحجر : ٨٧) اور ہم نے آپ کو سات، بار بار پڑھی جانے والی آیات عطا کی ہیں کے بارے میں فرماتے ہیں کہ کہ اس سے مراد سورة فاتحہ ہے۔ ابن عباس (رض) سے پوچھا گیا کہ ساتویں آیت کون سی ہے ؟ انھوں نے فرمایا : { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ }
2387 Saeed bin Jubair se riwayat hai ki Ibn Abbas (RA) Allah ke farmaan { wa laqad ataynaka sab'an minal mathani } (Al-Hijr: 87) aur hum ne aap ko saat, baar baar parhi jane wali aayaten ata ki hain ke baare mein farmate hain ki kah is se murad Surah Fatiha hai. Ibn Abbas (RA) se poocha gaya ki saatween aayat kaun si hai? Unhon ne farmaya: { Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim }.
Sudi narrates from Abd Khair that Sayyidina Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the seven oft-repeated verses, so he said: { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ } (i.e., Surah Fatihah). It was said to him that the seven oft-repeated verses are seven verses, which is the seventh? He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ }.

(٢٣٨٨) سُدی عبد خیر سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ سیدنا علی (رض) سے السبع المثانی کے بارے میں پوچھا گیا تو انھوں نے فرمایا : { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ } (یعنی سورة فاتحہ) ۔ ان سے کہا گیا کہ سبع مثانی تو سات آیات ہیں، ساتویں کونسی ہے ؟ آپ (رض) نے فرمایا : { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ }
Suda Abd Khair se riwayat karte hain ki Sayyiduna Ali (RA) se al-Sab'ul Mathani ke bare mein poocha gaya to unhon ne farmaya: {Alhamdulillah} (yani Surah Fatiha). Un se kaha gaya ki Sab'ul Mathani to saat aayat hain, saatween kaunsi hai? Aap (RA) ne farmaya: {Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim}.
Narated By Abu Huraira : The Prophet said: "Al-Hamdulillah (1:1) (All the praises are for Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)) consists of seven Ayat (verses) and it is one of As-Sab'ul-Mathani (the seven oft-repeated Verses, i.e., Surah Al-Fatiha) and the Glorious Quran." (It was also called) Umm-ul-Quran (the Mother of the Quran), Umm-ul-Kitab (the Mother of the Book), and Al-Fatiha (the Opening).

(٢٣٨٩) سیدنا ابوہریرہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِینَ } سات آیتیں ہیں ان میں سے ایک { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } ہے۔
اور یہی سورت (فاتحہ) السبع من المثانی، قرآن عظیم، ام القرآن اور فاتحہ الکتاب کہلاتی ہے۔
(2389) Saidina Abu Hurairah (RA) se riwayat hai keh Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya: {Alhamdulillah Rabbil Aalameen} saat aayaten hain in mein se ek {Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem} hai. Aur yahi Surah (Fateha) Al-Sab'u min al-Mathani, Quran Azeem, Umm ul Quran aur Fateha al-Kitab kehlati hai.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When you recite Al-Hamdulillah (all praise be to Allah), then recite Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim (in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), for it is the Mother of the Qur’an, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Repeated Verses, and Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim is a verse from it.”

(٢٣٩٠) حضرت ابوہریرہ (رض) سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے فرمایا : جب تم { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّہِ } پڑھو تو { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } بھی پڑھا کرو۔ یہ سورة ام القران، ام الکتاب اور السبع المثانی ہے اور { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } اس کی ایک آیت ہے۔
(2390) Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) se riwayat hai ki Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne farmaya : Jab tum { Alhamdulillah } parho to { Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem } bhi parh liya karo. Yeh Surah Al-Quran, Umm ul Kitab aur Assab'ul Mathani hai aur { Bismillah hir Rahman nir Raheem } is ki aik ayat hai.
It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b regarding the verse "Seven of the often repeated verses" (Al-Hijr: 87) that these refer to Surah Al-Fatihah, and it consists of seven verses, including "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim" (In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).

(٢٣٩١) محمد بن کعب سے { سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِی } [الحجر : ٨٧] کے بارے منقول ہے کہ یہ ام الکتاب (فاتحہ) ہے اور وہ { بِسْمِ اللَّہِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِیمِ } سمیت سات آیات ہیں۔
Muhammad bin Kab se {Sab'an minal mathani} [al-Hijr : 87] ke bare manqol hai ki yah Umm al-Kitab (Fatiha) hai aur woh {Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim} samit sat ayat hain.
