Chapter on the elderly person who cannot fast but can afford expiation should break his fast and pay ransom.
باب الشيخ الكبير لا يطيق الصوم ويقدر على الكفارة يفطر ويفتدي

Ata' said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting {And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person} So 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This has not been abrogated, but it is for the old, elderly man and the old, elderly woman who cannot bear fasting, so they should feed a poor person for each day [missed]."

(٨٣١٥) عطاء کہتے ہیں : میں نے ابن عباس (رض) کو پڑھتے سنا کہ { وَعَلَی الَّذِینَ یُطَوَّقُونَہُ فِدْیَۃٌ طَعَامُ مِسْکِینٍ } تو عباس (رض) نے کہا : یہ منسوخ نہیں ہے بلکہ یہ بوڑھے بزرگ اور بوڑھی عورت کے لیے ہے جو روزے کی استطاعت نہیں رکھتے تو وہ ہر دن کے عوض مسکین کو کھلائیں۔
Ata kehte hain : maine Ibn Abbas (RA) ko parhte suna keh { wa'alal lazeena yutawwaqoonaho fidyatun ta'aamu miskeen } to Abbas (RA) ne kaha : yeh mansookh nahin hai balkeh yeh budhe buzurg aur budhi aurat ke liye hai jo rozey ki istata'at nahin rakhte to woh har din ke awaz miskeen ko khilayen.
Ata ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated regarding the verse, "{And upon those who are able to fast, (is an expiation) feeding a poor person}" (2:184) - that they find it difficult, they are not able to fast. "{...but to feed a poor person (instead) is better..." (2:184) - so he feeds another poor person - "{...that is better for him...}" (2:184) - this is not abrogated. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Permission was not given in this except to the old man who cannot bear to fast and the sick person who has no hope of recovery."

(٨٣١٦) عطاء ابن عباس (رض) سے بیان کرتے ہیں اس قول کے بارے میں { وَعَلَی الَّذِینِ یُطِیقُونَہُ } کہ وہ مشقت محسوس کرتے ہیں استطاعت نہیں رکھتے { طَعَامُ مِسْکِینٍ فَمَنْ تَطَوَّعَ خَیْرًا } تو دوسرے مسکین کو کھلایا { فَہُوَ خَیْرٌ لَہُ } یہ منسوخ نہیں ہے۔ ابن عباس (رض) نے کہا : اس میں نہیں رخصت دی گئی مگر اس شیخ کیبر کو جو روزے کی طاقت نہیں رکھتا اور اس مریض کو جو جانتا ہے کہ شفایاب نہیں ہوگا۔
Ata Ibn Abbas (RA) se bayan karte hain is qol ke bare mein { wa'ala allatheena yuteeqoonahu } keh woh mashaqqat mehsoos karte hain istata'at nahin rakhte { ta'amu miskeenin faman tatawwa'a khayran } to doosre miskeen ko khilaya { fahuwa khayrun lahu } yeh mansookh nahin hai. Ibn Abbas (RA) ne kaha : is mein nahin rukhsat di gai magar is sheikh kabeer ko jo roze ki taqat nahin rakhta aur is mariz ko jo janta hai keh shifa yaab nahin hoga.
Mujaahid reported that (Ibn Abbas used to recite the verse): "Those who can afford it" (2:184) and he (Ibn Abbas) would say: "It refers to the old, aged person who cannot bear to fast, so he breaks the fast and feeds a poor person half a Sa' of wheat for each day."

(٨٣١٧) مجاہد بیان کرتے ہیں کہ ابن عباس (رض) سے پڑھا کرتے تھے : ” علی الذین یطیقونہ “ کہتے : اس سے مراد وہ بوڑھا بزرگ ہے جو روزے کی طاقت نہیں رکھتا تو افطار کرتا ہے اور گندم کا نصف صاع ہر دن کے عوض مسکین کو کھلائے۔
Mujahid bayan karte hain ke Ibn Abbas (RA) se parha karte the: "Alal lazeena yuteeqoonah" kehte: Is se murad woh boodha buzurg hai jo roze ki taqat nahin rakhta to iftar karta hai aur gandam ka nisf saa har din ke awaz miskeen ko khilaye.
(8318) 'Ikrimah [reported] from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that an elderly, old person has been given a concession to break the fast and to feed a poor person for each day, and there is no makeup fast on him. (٨٣١٨) عکرمہ ابن عباس (رض) اسے بیان کرتے ہیں کہ بوڑھے بزرگ کو رخصت دی گئی ہے کہ وہ افطار کرے اور ہر دن کے عوض مسکین کو ایک ایک مد روزانہ کھلائے اور اس پر قضاء بھی نہیں ہے۔
(ابن عباس (رض) کہتے ہیں کہ بوڑھے بزرگ کو رخصت دی گئی ہے کہ وہ افطار کرے اور ہر دن کے عوض مسکین کو کھلائے اور اس پر قضا بھی نہیں ہے۔ )
(8318) Akrma ibn Abbas (rz) ise bayan karte hain ki budhe buzurg ko rukhsat di gai hai ki wo aftar kare aur har din ke awaz miskeen ko aik aik madd rozana khilaye aur is par qaza bhi nahi hai. Ata' bin Abi Rabah narrated that he heard Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: “Whoever grows old and cannot fast during the month of Ramadan, then for every day is the fidyah of a Mudd of wheat.”

(٨٣١٩) عطاء بن ابی رباح کہتے ہیں کہ انھوں نے ابوہریرہ (رض) کو کہتے سنا کہ جو بوڑھا ہوجائے اور وہ رمضان کے مہینے کے روزے نہیں رکھ سکتا تو اس پر ہر دن کے عوض گندم کا ایک مد ہے۔
(8319) Ata bin Abi Rabah kahte hain ki unhon ne Abu Hurairah (RA) ko kahte suna ki jo boodha ho jaye aur wo Ramzan ke mahine ke roze nahi rakh sakta to us par har din ke awaz gandam ka ek mud hai.
Qatada (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) became weak for one year before his death. He broke his fast and ordered his family to feed a poor person for each day. Hisham said: Then he fed thirty. (In the narration of Hisham: Then he fed thirty poor persons).

(٨٣٢٠) قتادہ (رض) بیان کرتے ہیں کہ انس (رض) موت سے پہلے ایک سال کمزور ہوگئے تو انھوں نے افطار کیا اور اہل کو حکم دیا کہ وہ ہر دن کے عوض مسکین کو کھانا کھلائیں۔ ہشام کہتے ہیں : انھوں نے پھر تیس کو کھلایا۔
(ہشام کی حدیث میں ہے کہ پھر انھوں نے تیس مسکینوں کو کھانا کھلایا۔ )
(8320) Qatadah (rz) bayan karte hain ki Anas (rz) mout se pehle ek saal kamzor hogaye to unhon ne iftar kiya aur ahle ko hukm diya ki woh har din ke awaz miskeen ko khana khilayen. Hisham kehte hain : unhon ne phir tees ko khilaya.
(Hisham ki hadees mein hai ki phir unhon ne tees miskeenon ko khana khilaya.)
Hamid narrates that the year Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was unable to fast and he knew that he would not be able to make up for them either. So I asked his son, Umar, what Abu Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) did. He replied: A large dish of bread and meat was prepared, and the same amount, or even more, was distributed among the poor - meaning one person for each day, totaling thirty individuals.

(٨٣٢١) حمید بیان کرتے ہیں کہ جس سال انس (رض) فوت ہوئے تو وہ روزہ رکھنے کی طاقت نہیں رکھتے تھے اور انھوں نے جان لیا کہ قضاء بھی نہیں دے سکیں گے تو میں نے ان کے بیٹے عمر سے پوچھا کہ ابو حمزہ (رض) نے کیا کیا ؟ انھوں نے کہا : ایک ٹب روٹی اور گوشت کا تیار کیا گیا تو اتنوں یا زیادہ مسکینوں کو کھانا کھلادیا، یعنی تیس افراد کو ہر دن کے عوض ایک آدمی۔
(8321) hamid bayan karte hain ki jis sal anas (rz) foot huye to wo roza rakhne ki taqat nahi rakhte the aur unhon ne jaan liya ki qaza bhi nahi de saken ge to main ne un ke bete umar se puchha ki abu hamza (rz) ne kya kiya unhon ne kaha ek tab roti aur gosht ka taiyar kiya gaya to itnon ya ziada miskinon ko khana khila diya yani tees afrad ko har din ke awaz ek aadmi.
Mujaahid reported that I heard Qais bin Sa'ib say that a man should give the fidyah of the month of Ramadan so that the poor may be fed in return for it, for each day, and on my behalf, feed the poor.

(٨٣٢٢) مجاہد بیان کرتے ہیں کہ میں نے قیس بن سائب کو کہتے سنا کہ آدمی رمضان کے مہینے کا فدیہ دے تاکہ اس کے عوض مسکین کو کھلایا جائے ہر دن کے بدلے میں اور میری طرف سے مسکین کو کھلاؤ۔
(8322) Mujahid bayan karte hain ke maine Qais bin Saib ko kahte suna ke aadmi Ramzan ke mahine ka fidya deta takay iske awaz miskeen ko khilaya jaye har din ke badle mein aur meri taraf se miskeen ko khilao.
(8323) Said bin Musayyab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: { وَعَلَی الَّذِینِ یُطِیقُونَہُ فِدْیَۃٌ طَعَامُ مِسْکِینٍ } This refers to an old person who used to fast but then became weak, and a pregnant woman for whom it is feared, so upon them is the feeding of one poor person for a day in place of each fast until the month of Ramadan ends.

(٨٣٢٣) سعیدبن مسیب (رض) بیان کرتے ہیں : { وَعَلَی الَّذِینِ یُطِیقُونَہُ فِدْیَۃٌ طَعَامُ مِسْکِینٍ } اس سے مراد وہ بوڑھا ہے جو روزے رکھتا تھا پھر وہ عاجز آگیا اور حاملہ عورت جس پر مشفقت ہو تو ان پر ایک مسکین کا کھانا ایک دن کے عوض ہے یہاں تک کہ رمضان کا مہینہ پورا ہوجائے۔
Saeed bin Musayyab (Razi Allah Anhu) bayan karte hain : { Wa ala allatheena yuteeqoonahu fidyatun ta'aamu miskeen } is se murad woh boodha hai jo roze rakhta tha phir woh aajiz agaya aur hamil'a aurat jis par mushfaqat ho to un par ek miskeen ka khana ek din ke awaz hai yahan tak ke ramazan ka mahina poora hojaye.
Abu 'Umar, the freed slave of Sayyida Aisha, narrated that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to recite this verse: {And on those who take it upon themselves is a ransom [to be paid]}.
