Abdullah bin Umar narrates that Umar was asked, "Don't you desire to be the Caliph?" He replied, "If I abandon (the Caliphate), then before me, someone better than me abandoned it, meaning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If I seek the Caliphate, then before me, Abu Bakr, who was better than me, was made the Caliph." He (the narrator) says, "They praised him for this and said, "With happiness and fear, I cannot bear the burden of this, whether alive or dead. I only wish to be saved from it, neither gaining anything from it nor having it imposed upon me."

(١٦٥٧٠) عبداللہ بن عمر فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت عمر کو کہا گیا کہ کیا آپ خلیفہ بننا نہیں چاہتے تو فرمایا : اگر میں چھوڑ دوں تو مجھ سے پہلے مجھ سے بہتر نے بھی چھوڑا، یعنی رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے۔ اگر میں خلافت طلب کروں تو مجھ سے پہلے ابوبکر جو مجھ سے بہتر تھے خلیفہ بنائے گئے ۔ فرماتے ہیں : انھوں نے اس پر ثناء بیان کی اور فرمایا : خوشی سے اور ڈرتے ہوئے میں اس بات کا نہ زندہ اور نہ مردہ متحمل ہوں۔ میں تو یہ چاہتا ہوں کہ مجھے اس سے نجات مل جائے نہ میرے لیے کچھ ہو اور نہ مجھ پر۔
16570 Abdullah bin Umar farmate hain keh Hazrat Umar ko kaha gaya keh kya aap khalifa banana nahin chahte to farmaya: Agar main chhor dun to mujh se pehle mujh se behtar ne bhi chhora, yani Rasul Allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne. Agar main khilafat talab karoon to mujh se pehle Abu Bakr jo mujh se behtar the khalifa banaye gaye. Farmate hain: Unhon ne is par sana bayan ki aur farmaya: Khushi se aur darte hue main is baat ka na zinda aur na murda mutahmil hun. Main to yeh chahta hun keh mujhe is se nijaat mil jaye na mere liye kuchh ho aur na mujh par.
Ibn Umar narrated: I came to Hafsah, she said: "Do you know that your father has been made Caliph, and he was not even willing to accept it?" I said: "Not at all." She said: "This is what is going to happen." I swore that I would definitely talk to him about it. Then I went on a journey or a battle and could not speak to him. When I came back, I met my father and he started asking me questions. I said: "I heard something from the people, I cannot repeat it to you." He (Ibn Umar) said: They think that you have been made Caliph without your consent, and I know if you had a shepherd for your goats and he came to you and left his duty saying that he has lost it (the flock of goats), and the responsibility of people is even greater. He (Ibn Umar) said: "He agreed with me and paused for a while, then raised his head and said: "Allah has to protect His religion. If I did not seek the Caliphate, then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not seek it either. If I am the Caliph, then Abu Bakr was also the Caliph." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He kept mentioning the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr, so I understood that no one can do justice to you except the Caliph.

(١٦٥٧٢) ابن عمر فرماتے ہیں کہ میں حضرت حفصہ کے پاس آیا، اس نے کہا کہ کیا تمہیں پتہ ہے ابو جی کو خلیفہ بنادیا گیا ہے اور وہ اس پر راضی بھی نہیں تھے ؟ کہا : ہرگز نہیں، کہنے لگیں : ایسا ہونے والا ہے۔ میں نے قسم اٹھائی کہ اس پر میں ضرور ان سے بات کروں گا۔ پھر میں کسی سفر یا غزوہ میں چلا گیا، بات نہ کرسکا۔ جب واپس لوٹا تو اپنے والد سے ملا اور وہ مجھ سے سوالات کرنے لگے۔ میں نے کہا : میں نے لوگوں سے کچھ سنا ہے، میں وہ آپ کو نہیں کہہ سکتا۔ ان کا خیال ہے کہ آپ کی رضا مندی کے بغیر آپ کو خلیفہ بنایا گیا ہے اور میں جانتا ہوں اگر آپ کی بکریوں کا کوئی چرواہا ہوتا اور وہ آپ کے پاس آتا اور اپنی رعایت کو چھوڑ دیتا کہ اس سے وہ ضائع ہوگئی ہے اور لوگوں کی نگرانی تو اس سے بھی زیادہ سخت ہے۔ فرماتے ہیں : انھوں نے میری بات کی موافقت کی تھوڑی دیر ٹھہرے، پھر سر اٹھایا اور فرمایا : اللہ نے اپنے دین کی حفاظت کرنی ہے۔ اگر میں نے خلافت طلب نہیں کی تو رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے بھی تو طلب نہیں کی تھی۔ اگر میں خلیفہ بنا ہوں تو ابوبکر بھی نے خلیفہ بنے تھے۔ ابن عمر (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ وہ رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اور ابوبکر کا ہی ذکر کرتے رہے تو میں سمجھ گیا کہ غیر خلیفہ کی صورت میں کوئی آپ سے عدل نہیں کرسکتا۔
(16572) ibne umar farmate hain ke mein hazrat hafsah ke pas aaya, usne kaha ke kya tumhen pata hai abu ji ko khalifa banadiya gaya hai aur wo is par razi bhi nahin the? kaha: hargiz nahin, kehne lagi: aisa hone wala hai. maine qasam uthai ke is par mein zaroor unse baat karoonga. phir mein kisi safar ya gazwah mein chala gaya, baat na karsaka. jab wapas lota to apne wald se mila aur wo mujhse sawalat karne lage. maine kaha: maine logon se kuchh suna hai, mein wo aapko nahin keh sakta. unka khayal hai ke aapki raza mandi ke baghair aapko khalifa banaya gaya hai aur mein janta hun agar aapki bakriyon ka koi charwaha hota aur wo aapke pas aata aur apni riayat ko chhor deta ke usse wo zaya ho gayi hai aur logon ki nigrani to usse bhi ziada sakht hai. farmate hain: unhonne meri baat ki muwafqat ki thodi der thehre, phir sar uthaya aur farmaya: allah ne apne din ki hifazat karni hai. agar maine khilafat talab nahin ki to rasool allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne bhi to talab nahin ki thi. agar mein khalifa bana hun to abubakar ne bhi khalifa bane the. ibne umar (raz) farmate hain ke wo rasool allah ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) aur abubakar ka hi zikr karte rahe to mein samjha ke ghair khalifa ki soorat mein koi aapse adl nahin karsakta.
Shaqiq bin Salma narrates that when Ali was asked to appoint a caliph for them, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not appoint a caliph, so how can I? However, if Allah intends good for His servants, He unites them on righteousness, just as He united them after His Prophet.

(١٦٥٧٣) شقیق بن سلمہ کہتے ہیں کہ حضرت علی کو کہا گیا کہ ہمارے لیے خلیفہ مقرر فرما دیں تو فرمایا : نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے خلیفہ مقرر نہیں فرمایا۔ میں کیسے مقرر کر دوں۔ لیکن اگر اللہ انپے بندوں سے بھلائی کا ارادہ کریں تو انھیں خیر پر جمع فرما دیتے ہیں، جیسے اس نے اپنے نبی کے بعد جمع فرما دیا تھا۔
16573 Shaqiq bin Salma kehte hain ke Hazrat Ali ko kaha gaya ke hamare liye Khalifa muqarrar farma den to farmaya Nabi ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)) ne Khalifa muqarrar nahin farmaya mein kaise muqarrar kar dun lekin agar Allah apne bandon se bhalayi ka irada karen to unhen khair par jama farma dete hain jaise usne apne Nabi ke baad jama farma diya tha
Ibn Abbas narrated that once Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he (the Prophet) was on his deathbed. The people asked, "O Abu Hassan! How is the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" He replied, "Praise be to Allah, he is better." Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib held Ali's hand and said, "By Allah! After three (days), the one with the staff will be gone, and I think that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) will pass away in this illness. I know the faces of the sons of Abdul Muttalib at the time of death. So come, let's ask the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the matter of Khilafat (leadership). If it's for us, then it will be known. If it's for others, we will talk to him to advise them about us." Ali said, "I will never ask him (the Prophet) this question because if he refuses, then the people will never give us this right."

(١٦٥٧٤) ابن عباس فرماتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ حضرت علی (رض) نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کے پاس سے نکلے۔ جب آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) مرض الموت میں تھے۔ لوگوں نے پوچھا : اے ابو حسن ! نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کیسے ہیں ؟ فرمایا : الحمد للہ بہتر ہیں۔ عباس بن عبدالمطلب نے علی کا ہاتھ پکڑا اور کہا : آپ اللہ کی قسم ! تین کے بعد لاٹھی والے ہیں اور مجھے لگتا ہے کہ اسی تکلیف میں نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) فوت ہوجائیں گے اور موت کے وقت میں بنو عبدالمطلب کے چہروں کو جانتا ہوں؛ لہٰذا چلو نبی (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) سے امارت کے بارے میں پوچھ لیں۔ اگر ہم میں ہوگی تو پتہ چل جائے گا۔ اگر غیروں میں ہوگی تو ہم بات کریں گے کہ ہمارے بارے میں وصیت فرما دیں تو علی فرمانے لگے : میں آپ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) سے کبھی سوال نہیں کروں گا؛ کیونکہ اگر آپ نے منع کردیا تو لوگ پھر کبھی ہمیں یہ نہیں دیں گے۔
(16574) Ibne Abbas farmate hain ke ek martaba Hazrat Ali (RA) Nabi (SAW) ke paas se nikle. Jab aap (SAW) marz ul maut mein the. Logon ne poocha: Aye Abu Hasan! Nabi (SAW) kaise hain? Farmaya: Alhamdulillah behtar hain. Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib ne Ali ka hath pakra aur kaha: Aap Allah ki qasam! Teen ke baad lathi wale hain aur mujhe lagta hai ke isi takleef mein Nabi (SAW) فوت ho jayenge aur maut ke waqt mein Banu Abdul Muttalib ke chehron ko janta hun; lihaza chalo Nabi (SAW) se imarat ke bare mein poochh lein. Agar hum mein hogi to pata chal jayega. Agar ghairon mein hogi to hum baat karenge ke hamare bare mein wasiyat farma den to Ali farmane lage: Mein aap (SAW) se kabhi sawal nahin karoonga; kyunki agar aap ne mana kar diya to log phir kabhi humein ye nahin denge.
Aisha (RA) narrates: When Abu Bakr (RA) became ill, so-and-so came to him and said: "O Caliph of the Messenger! Who knows what will happen tomorrow? Will you appoint Umar as the Caliph?" She said: "We made him sit up and he said: 'Are you frightening me with Allah? I say that I have appointed the best among you as the Caliph.'"

(١٦٥٧٥) حضرت عائشہ (رض) فرماتی ہیں : جب ابوبکر بوجھل ہوگئے تو فلاں فلاں آپ کے پاس آئے اور کہنے لگے : اے خلیفۃ الرسول ! کیا پتہ کل کیا ہوگا آپ عمر کو خلیفہ نامزد کردیا ؟ فرماتی ہیں : ہم نے آپ کو بٹھایا تو فرمایا : کیا تم مجھے اللہ سے ڈراتے ہو ؟ میں کہتا ہوں کہ میں نے تم میں جو سب سے بہتر ہے اسے خلیفہ نامزد کرتا ہوں۔
Hazrat Aisha (Raz) farmati hain: Jab Abu Bakar bojhal hogaye to falan falan aap ke pas aaye aur kahne lage: Aye Khalifa-tul-Rasool! Kiya pata kal kya hoga aap Umar ko Khalifa naamzad kar diya? Farmati hain: Hum ne aap ko bithaya to farmaya: Kiya tum mujhe Allah se darate ho? Main kahta hoon ke main ne tum mein jo sab se behtar hai use Khalifa naamzad karta hoon.
Yusuf bin Muhammad said that it reached him that Abu Bakr, during his illness, dictated a will to Uthman: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the will of Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa, at the time of his departure from this world, when even the liar speaks the truth, the betrayer returns the trust, and the disbeliever thinks of believing. I appoint Umar as the Caliph after me. If he does justice, then this is what I think of him and what I hope for. And if he oppresses and transgresses, then I do not know the unseen, and for every person is what he has earned. { And those who have oppressed will know to what kind of return they will be returned.} [Ash-Shu'ara 227].”

(١٦٥٧٦) یوسف بن محمد کہتے ہیں کہ مجھے یہ بات پہنچی کہ حضرت ابوبکر نے اپنی بیماری میں حضرت عثمان کو وصیت لکھوائی تھی : ” بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم، یہ وصیت ابوبکر بن ابی قحافہ کی طرف سے ان کے دنیا سے رخصت ہوتے وقت کہ جب جھوٹا بھی سچ بولتا ہے، خائن بھی امنت ادا کرتا ہے اور کافر بھی ایمان لانے کی سوچتا ہے۔ میں اپنے بعد عمر کو خلیفہ نامزد کرتا ہوں۔ اگر وہ انصاف کریں تو یہ میرا ان کے بارے میں گمان ہے اور میری امید ہے اور اگر وہ ظلم و زیادتی کریں تو میں غیب نہیں جانتا اور ہر بندے کے لیے وہی ہے جو اس نے کمایا { وَسَیَعْلَمُ الَّذِیْنَ ظَلَمُوْٓا اَیَّ مُنقَلَبٍ یَّنقَلِبُوْنَ } [الشعراء ٢٢٧]
(16576) Yusuf bin Muhammad kehte hain ki mujhe yeh baat pahunchi ki Hazrat Abu Bakr ne apni beemari mein Hazrat Usman ko wasiyat likhwai thi : "Bismillah ir Rahman ir Raheem, yeh wasiyat Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa ki taraf se un ke duniya se rukhsat hote waqt kah jab jhutha bhi sach bolta hai, khain bhi amanat ada karta hai aur kafir bhi imaan laane ki sochta hai. Main apne baad Umar ko khalifa naamzad karta hun. Agar woh insaf karein to yeh mera un ke baare mein guman hai aur meri umeed hai aur agar woh zulm o ziyadati karein to main ghaib nahin janta aur har bande ke liye wohi hai jo usne kamaya { وَسَیَعْلَمُ الَّذِیْنَ ظَلَمُوْٓا اَیَّ مُنقَلَبٍ یَّنقَلِبُوْنَ } [Ash-Shu'ara 227].
