Abu Raja’ said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey. We traveled one night until, at the end of the night, we stopped at a resting place, and there is no resting place more beloved to the traveler than it. We were not awakened except by the heat of the sun. The first of us to awaken was so-and-so, then so-and-so, then so-and-so – Abu Raja’ was naming them but Awf forgot them – then Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was the fourth. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would sleep, we would not wake him until he woke himself, for we did not know what he experienced in his sleep. When Umar awoke and saw the condition of the people, for he was a large, corpulent man, he shouted out the Takbir and raised his voice. He continued to shout the Takbir and raise his voice until he woke the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with his voice. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, awoke, they complained to him about what had happened to them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no harm. Set out.” So they traveled for a short distance and then stopped. He called for water, performed ablution, and the call to prayer was given. He prayed with the people and when he finished his prayer, there was a man, a hypocrite, who had not prayed with the people. The Prophet said, “What prevented you from praying with the people, so-and-so?” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, I became sexually impure and there is no water.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Use the earth, for it is sufficient for you.” Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out and the people complained to him of thirst. He stopped and called for so-and-so – Abu Raja’ was naming him but Awf forgot him – and he called for Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. He said, “Go and bring us some water.” They found a woman between two waterskins or two leather containers of water on her camel. They said to her, “Where is the water?” She said, “I left the water at this time yesterday and we are a people who have stayed behind (i.e., her people had moved ahead, leaving her behind).” They said to her, “Come along then.” She said, “To where?” They said, “To the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” She said, “Is this the one they call the boy?” They said, “He is the one you mean. Come along then.” They came with her to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him the story. He had her dismount her camel. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called for a vessel, emptied the contents of the two waterskins or leather containers into it, tilted their mouths, and then untied the camel. It was announced to the people to drink and water their animals. Whoever wished to drink did so, and whoever wished to water their animals did so. The last of them was the one who had become sexually impure, and he was given a vessel of water. He said, “Go and pour it over yourself.” She was standing there, watching what they were doing with her water. By Allah, it seemed to us when they had finished as if it were more full than when they had started. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Gather some provisions for her.” They gathered up for her a mixture of dates, flour, and toasted grains, until they had gathered a large amount of provisions, and placed it in a cloth. They helped her mount her camel and placed the cloth in front of her. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her, “Know that by Allah, we have not diminished any of your water, but it was Allah who gave us drink.” She came to her people, who were astonished at her. They said, “What has happened to you, so-and-so?” She said, “Something amazing! I met two men who took me to this one they call the boy. He did such and such to me” – relating what had happened. “By Allah, he is either the most magical of all that is between this point and that point, or he is truly the Messenger of Allah!” After that, the Muslims would raid the polytheists in her area but would not touch the valley where she was. So she said to her people, “By Allah, these people are deliberately avoiding you. Will you not accept Islam?” They obeyed her and entered into Islam.
