It is narrated on the authority of Laqeet bin 'Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set out to meet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), accompanied by Nahik bin 'Asim bin Malik bin Al-Munthafiq. He said: We arrived in Madinah during the last days of Rajab. We prayed Fajr with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). After the prayer, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered a sermon. He said, "O people! For the past three days, I have been gathering my voice to address you. Is there anyone among you who has been sent by his people?"
They said, "Tell us what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said." He replied, "Perhaps someone might add to it from himself, or a companion might add to it, or a misguided person might add to it. Beware! I will be asked if I conveyed the message of Allah to you. Beware! Listen carefully, for you will live a good life. Beware! Listen carefully, for you will live a good life. Beware! Sit down."
All the people sat down, but I and my companion remained standing until the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heart and eyes turned towards us. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am about to ask you for my need. Do not be hasty in this matter (but answer me patiently)."
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Ask what your heart desires."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you have knowledge of the unseen (except what Allah has revealed)?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled and tilted his head. He knew that I wanted to know the truth. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Your Lord has kept the keys to five unseen matters with Himself. No one knows them (independently) except Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured with his hand.
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are those keys?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "The knowledge of death. Only Allah knows when your death will come, and you do not know it. And Allah knows when He will send rain upon you. He sends down the rain of mercy upon the distressed and the troubled."
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled again and said, "Allah knows that your ease is very near."
Laqeet said, "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, may Allah always keep you smiling."
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Allah knows what will happen tomorrow, and He knows what you will do tomorrow, and you do not know it. And Allah knows the (appointed time and the appointed) Day of Judgment." The narrator said, "I think it was also mentioned what is in the womb."
The narrator said, "We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we only know what other people know, and you know that we belong to a tribe that will not accept our testimony. This is because no one is willing to believe us due to our indecent actions, our constant warfare, and our family background.'"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "You will live for a while, and then your Prophet will pass away. Then you will live for a while longer, and then a cry will be heard that will cause every living creature on earth to die, and even the angels who reside in the presence of your Lord (will cease to exist). Then the earth will be empty, and your Lord will send down the sky. He will send down torrential rain from beneath the Throne. By your Lord, the place where every murdered person was killed and the grave of every buried person will be opened, and he will be pulled out by his head until he sits up. Allah will ask, 'How long have you been here?' He will say, 'O my Lord, I came here yesterday.' He will think that he has not spent much time buried."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, when our bodies have been scattered by the wind, decomposed, and eaten by wild animals, how will Allah gather us after that?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Shall I not give you an example of this from the blessings of Allah? Dust settles on the ground."
I said, "But it will never come back to life."
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Then Allah sends down rain upon it, and it is not long before plants emerge from the ground. By Allah, gathering you from the water is easier for Allah than extracting plants from the earth. Thus, you will come out of your graves and from the places where you were killed. Sometimes you will look at Him, and sometimes He will look at you."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, how will that be? He is One, while we will fill the entire earth. We will look at Him, but how will He look at us?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Let me give you another example from the blessings of Allah. The sun and the moon are a small sign of Allah. We can see both of them at the same time, and they can both see you, and you have no difficulty in seeing them. By Allah, the One who will see you and whom you will see has more power than the moon and the sun have over you."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, when we meet our Lord, how will Allah deal with us?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "You will be presented before Him, your books (of deeds) will be open before Him, and you will not be able to hide anything from Him. Your Lord will take a handful of water and sprinkle it towards you. By your Lord, every person will be touched by its drops. The face of the believer will become like his white shroud, and the face of the disbeliever will become black like coal. Then your Prophet will return, and all the righteous people will be behind him. They will pass over a bridge over Hellfire, stepping on hot coals and saying, 'Hurry, hurry!' Then your Lord will say..."
Then the people will come to the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Cistern, very thirsty. By your Lord, whoever among you reaches out his hand will be given a cup. It will quench his thirst, cleanse him from the exhaustion of walking, and purify him from urine and feces. The sun and the moon will be seized, and you will not see either of them.
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, how will we see on that day (without the light of the sun and the moon)?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Just as you see now, so will you see then. This will be on the day when the earth will illuminate them, and the mountains will come before it."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, how will we be rewarded for our sins and good deeds?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "The reward of one good deed will be multiplied by ten, and the punishment for one sin will be only one or it will be forgiven."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are Paradise and Hellfire?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "By your Lord, Paradise has eight gates, and the distance between every two gates is a seventy-year journey for a horseman. And Hellfire has seven gates, and the distance between every two gates is also a seventy-year journey for a horseman."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what can you tell us about the things in Paradise?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "There are rivers of pure honey, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, and rivers of wine that do not intoxicate or cause shame. They will never run dry. And there are fruits. And by your Lord, you have no knowledge of such goodness! There are pure women."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we have wives there?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Yes, righteous men will have righteous wives there, and you will enjoy them just as you do in this world, and they will enjoy you. The only difference is that there will be no childbirth."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this the highest level we will attain in Paradise?"
I then said, "O Messenger of Allah, on what matter shall I pledge allegiance to you?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) extended his hand and said, "On the condition that you will establish prayer, pay the Zakah, and avoid associating partners with Allah. You will not take anyone as a partner with Allah."
I said, "We will consider lawful whatever we wish, and the sin will be upon the one who commits it."
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "If you are permitted to do so, then consider lawful whatever you wish, and you will bear the sin alone."
We pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and returned.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "By your Lord, these two men are the most truthful and the most God-fearing among the first and the last."
Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "The son of so-and-so belongs to Bani Bakr bin Wa'il. O Messenger of Allah, who are these people?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "They are from Bani Munthafiq."
I turned to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about those of us who died during the time of ignorance? Was there anyone good among them?"
A man from the Quraysh said, "Your father Munthafiq is in Hellfire."
Laqeet said, "This man's words about my father in the presence of all the people ignited a fire within me. I wanted to ask, 'O Messenger of Allah, what about your parents?' But then a better phrase came to my mind, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what about your family?'
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "By Allah, if you were to pass by the grave of any polytheist from the Quraysh or the 'Amir, then say, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has sent me to you with good news of something that will harm you. You will be dragged on your face and stomach into Hellfire.'"
I said, "O Messenger of Allah, how should I treat them when they have adopted practices that they believe to be the true religion, and they consider themselves to be righteous and pious?"
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Allah sends a prophet after every seven nations. Whoever obeys his prophet will be among the guided, and whoever disobeys his prophet will be among the misguided."
**This hadith is comprehensive on this topic. It has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and all of its narrators are from Madinah. However, Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) did not narrate it.**
